2,000 Man Lyrics

Well, my name is a number
A piece of plastic film
And I'm growin' funny flowers
In my little window sill

Dont you know I'm a 2,000 man
And my kids, they just don't understand me at all

Well my wife still respects me
I really misused her
I am having an affair
With the Random computer

Don't you know I'm a 2,000 man
And my kids, they just don't understand me at all

Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy, proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy, proud of your sun
Oh daddy, your brain's still flashin'
Like it did when you were young
Or do you come down crashin'
Seeing all the things you'd done
Spacing out and having fun

Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy, proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy, proud of your sun

Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy, proud of your sun
Oh daddy, proud of your planet
Oh mummy, proud of your sun

And you know who's the 2000 man
and your kids they just won't understand you at all

I first heard this song in 1979 performed by lead guitarist, Ace Frehley of KISS on the Dynasty album. I liked it then and still like both versions. Ace (birthname; Paul Daniel Frehley) wrote 2 other songs on Dynasty album; 'Hard Times' and 'Save Your Love'. The album brought huge success for KISS in Australia.

I would agree with Pirtyfool22 on this one.

It suggests how new technology throughout the "space race" era and onward will fuel the business world. It suggests the dehumanization of our culture through our obsession for novel achievement, and self-improvements... as well as predicting the abstraction of individual identity that can see now in today's corporate environment: super-specialized jobs, cubicles and office plants, name tags and badges, etc.

2000 Man is engulfed in his career, he forgets his family, his wife, and kids. And they don't understand him.

Also note, the word "sun" shown here is just a phonetic play-on-words -- the actual lyric is "son". Like this:

"Oh daddy, proud of your planet / Oh mommy, proud of your son"

For those interested in contemporary perspective, check out the song "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot" by Grandaddy. It is a direct response to 2000 Man, written by an artist who's career in the 21st century lies within the software industry, and how he relates to 2000 man.

One of the better songs from TSMR. Jagger ruminates on growing old and out of place.

i was thinking this song was about corruption as a result of the advent of technology in everyday lives

I thought about the same thing as above also that it was interesting that although the line about "having an affair with a random computer" was written in 1967 it can be related pornography on the internet.... possibly in the year 2000? cool

I think when Mike and Keith wrote this song, the idea of "having an affair with a random computer" was about becoming obsessed with work and technology and forgetting about the people that matter.

However, as it stands, this song was a better predictor of life in the year 2000 than anything from science fiction novels or movies that came out in the same era.
