the album i believe is 1 of there best pieces of work, its mind blowing.and this song is perfect,i think this song is about damons battle with life not neccersarilly fame
As this song may appear to be easy to unwravel, i don't think it is. I think that this is possibly one of the most complex lyric that i have ever seen. I can some meaning in a couple of ways, but seem to cancel eachother out. It could be, that Blur was taking a definitive change in the style of their music at the time, and is putting it in peoples faces and telling them to battle or to step down. It could also be about fame ( especially the first verse ). The three verses, could be his (Damon's) interpretations of fame. When Blur first came out, he loved the fame ( 1st verse ), then the band started to fight and almost broke up during The Great Escape era and they all hated eachother and Damon thought they were all jealous ( 2nd )..now, he doesn't care about fame and is about to step down from the limelight ( 3rd ). The chorus could mean that people should stop caring about the band and such matters and find their own problems to deal with. Just my interpretation........
I think this album is amazing, but u have to be a hard core blur fan to like it.
this song could be about the battle between blur and oasis. the chart war inpoticular. overall this album seems to be a look back at blur's life.
it could be about battle with life or fame or anything else, depending on u.Everyone may have different ideas.there is much worth battling for.
this song's my fav in the 13 album.they tried some glam rockand did well. As a matter of fact they explored a new field in this excellent album,a combination of several types of music . blur's no longer a normal britpop band after this album coming out. they go beyond that and did an excellent job!
Does Graham sing the verses?
i sorta dig the little snippet at the end. In fact, I plan to steal it for one of my own pieces, as soon as I get around to writing them.
This whole album is a paeon to the relationship Albarn and Eleastica singer Justine Frischmann had. The opening and closing songs are obviously about the pain of breakup and ultimate acceptance of it. However the dense, often incomprehensible lyrics in the songs between are as much about this struggle. Rather than being meaningless they are evocative of emotions, pain and ddelirium beyond language. The keynote of 'sense' in the song is the opening and closing line - 'Battle SOMEONE'. This is not the press or another band etc. as suggested above, it is your lover. The madness and disorientation of a destructive urge ('can turn your sights/kill until sub-zero).
'Battle' always struck me as part lullaby & part alien abduction. It also makes me think of things rattling & rolling about in an attic overhead.
teapot: I think it's Damon singing.
good song, the album was a little disappointing though, good though
