Strange News from Another Star Lyrics
All I want to be is washed out by the sea
No death star over me
Won't give me any peace
All I want is light relief
Put the crazies on the street
Give them guns and feed them meat
Now shoot the death star down
Dig a hole and put it down
Thousand miles underground
They say it's no game
There's strange news from another star
I'm lost, I'm lost
There's strange news from another star
Give me all your stuff
Until I can't get up
Watch the whole world freeze
Counting tin cans in our sleep
Submarines are diving deep
I don't believe in me
I don't believe in me
All I've ever done is tame
Will you love me all the same
Will you love me though
Always the same
They say it's no game
There's strange news from another star
I'm lost, I'm lost
There's strange news from another star
No death star over me
Won't give me any peace
All I want is light relief
Put the crazies on the street
Give them guns and feed them meat
Now shoot the death star down
Dig a hole and put it down
Thousand miles underground
There's strange news from another star
I'm lost, I'm lost
There's strange news from another star
Until I can't get up
Watch the whole world freeze
Counting tin cans in our sleep
Submarines are diving deep
I don't believe in me
I don't believe in me
All I've ever done is tame
Will you love me all the same
Will you love me though
Always the same
There's strange news from another star
I'm lost, I'm lost
There's strange news from another star

It's like they took every song from Ziggy Stardust and rolled 'em into one.
Much like beetlebum from the same album, I think this is another song about Damon's stint in the late 90s as a heroin user. To me it seems like an abstract insight into why he did it and the way it made him feel. "Give me all your stuff, until I can't get up. Watch the whole world freeze, counting tin cans in our sleep" confirms it for me in a literal sense, though I think from the beginning there's a very woozy, opiate theme - "all I want to be, is washed up by the sea". Maybe the Death Star is a symbol of his responsibilities and struggles in life be it his identity as a pop star, and he just wants to escape from... Or possibly the Death Star is heroin itself.
Beautiful and mysterious, great lyrics. Very Radioheadish.
theres a line missing by the way. after "Countig tin can in our sleep" there should be "submarines are diveing deep"
Interesting that no one has taken into account the short story this song is named after, Strange News from Another Star (by Hermann Hesse). Damon has mentioned before being a fan of Hesse, and it seems it could be heavily tied into the themes of the story. this is probebrly my favorite song ever. i couldnt tell you exactly what the lyrics mean, but when i listen to the song it congers up an image of the future, where the surface of the earth if inhospitable due to a huge war or something. watch the muse-'Sing for Absolution' vidio, abit like that.
see when i read that first impressions the guy is really down and he's had a kick in the teeth and he wants to find somewhere where there's no hurt and everyone likes you. and that place is another star
this reminds me of Bowie's "Starman" both great songs
