Old Hat Lyrics

Call me disruptive say I break your concentration
Familiar patterned like the waves that break too fast
What do you do when it's so brand new that it kills you?
Came on too strong couldn't stand it slow
But now I know

She can knock me back like a champ
Disembodied ringlets from hair that look like yours
Call me the looming shapes of winter dusk impending
She barely fits inside my head but I feel something

Every element but one is in my thrall
Stop traffic as I lie down in your footpath
Like a simile I paint suggestive pictures of me and you

Disembodied ringlets from hair that looked like yours
Call me the looming shapes of winter dusk impending
Call me freaky
Call me childish
Call me Ishmael
Just call me back
Call me back
Call me back and I'll follow you around

I forget what my friends look like
and they forget why they like me
But that's old hat.
I'm so happy.
How do you write about that? (x2)
Disembodied ringlets from hair that looked like yours
Call me the looming shapes of winter dusk impending

my fav HD song and no one has commented on it. strange. anyways i'm not too good at deciphering stuff, but it sounds to me like he's giddy over a new girl he met or something. at least the whole "call me back and i'll follow you around" and "i'm so happy how do you write about that?" though i could be way off.

by the way, the lyric of "call me freaky, call me childish, call me Ishmael" Genius!

Two points for catching the Moby Dick reference. Minus three points for using the word juxtaposition for no real reason.

It's a juxtaposition of two different meanings of 'call me'.

It's a brilliant line reagrdless. Harvey Danger are one of my favourite bands for witty, creative lyrics. Sean Nelson's delivery always adds something as well. The "disembodied ringlets..." line is brilliant too.

The song is about he wants dive into this relationship and trying to talk round this girl who's not as crazy about him as he is about her. He lists a lot of his flaws that she sees ("call me childish" etc.). "The looming shapes of winter" are dark times just around the corner, so a reference to how she's cautious about entering a relationship with him because it might turn out badly.

this is my favorite harvey danger song, too ... i think no one's commented on it because most of us have been here and it's pretty self explanatory to everyone. "i'm so happy, how do you write about that?" and "call me freaky, call me childish, call me ishmael, just call me back" is pure genius. i love this entire cd, actually, but particurally this song.

my favorite as well!! the whole cd rocks my world....anyway yeah pretty much what blaubs21 and darksparkles said, new girl, happiness, etc, also maybe he's spending so much time on her that he forgets what his friends look like....you get the idea

i think it is about being obsessed with someone and that obsession taking over to the point where you don't even see your friends anymore

"Like a similie I paint suggestive pictures" should be "Like a similie I paint suggestive pictures of me and you" By the way, that is a simile about a simile.

Anyone know what the backup singers are singing during the "I forget what my friends look like and they forget why they like me" part?

It's basically just repeating it. The exact words the girl sings are:

I forget What they look like and they forget why they like me It's old hat I'm so Happy

yeah im pretty sure it is. oh and, "a simile about a simile"?...brilliant. never even thought about it.
