School Lyrics
I can see you in the morning
When you go to school
Don't forget our books,
You know you've got to learn the golden rule.
Stop your play and go on with your work,
And be like Johnnie Toogood.
Don't you know he never shrinks, he's coming along
After school is over
You aer playing in the dark,
Don't be out too late
Don't let it get too dark.
They tell you not to hang around
And learn what life's about
And grow up just like them,
Won't let you work it out
And you're full of doubt
Maybe I'm mistaken
Expecting you to fight
Or maybe I'm just crazy
I don't know wrong from right. But while I'm still living
I've just got this to say
It's always up to you, if you want to be that,
Want to see that, want to see it that way.
Don't do this and don't do that
What are they tryin' to do ?
Make a good boy of you,
Do they know where it's at?
Don't criticise they're ols and wise
Do as they tell you to,
Don't want the devit to,
Come and pull outv your eyes.
You're coming along
When you go to school
Don't forget our books,
You know you've got to learn the golden rule.
Stop your play and go on with your work,
And be like Johnnie Toogood.
Don't you know he never shrinks, he's coming along
You aer playing in the dark,

Now this song is obviously speaking out against school and the conformity involved in it. Now as grade 11 student at 17, I am listing to a song like this and looking and how it reflects my life and how school has changed me thus far. But "school" in this song is simply a symbolic term, and can be applied to work, media(tv,newspapers, billboards, magazines...etc), and even your own peers. It would be simply lunacy to say that noone is trying to conform us or make us think in they're perspective...heck this song in itself does just that, but....it opens our eyes to how we've been "controlled" so far and what you can do about it. Now one part of the song I never really understood for quite a while untill one day it just appeard to me... Coincedentally ...I was at school and I went to the washroom and while i was doing my business i was loking at the writing on the wall and there was some brilliant stuff lol....but one thing caught my attention. there was a quote and it was written inside a drawing of a tv set. It said... "The revolution will not be televised...." at first it just kinda went in one ear and out the other but later on i really got thinking about it. when it all comes down too it the governments have 100% control of what we hear and see in the media, and how it is presented, so if something happens such as a the small beginnings a communist revolution we may never know untill it physically reaches us or something major happens to us.
Now....where this fits into school ... towards the middle of the song this line comes up..."Maybe I'm mistaken Expecting you to fight"...now take this as you will, but consider the possibilities of what is happening right now in the world that we wont hear till its too late....

@tdg_88 Well… There are some things in this world that are just inherently right and wrong. It doesn’t matter what religion you are… What political party you belong to etc. Some basic things in life are just right and somethings are wrong. These were the things taught when I started my school journey. But somewhere between 1973 and now all that has morphed into teaching wokeness and particular political values. We would all do well to go back to teaching the basic rights and wrongs that were taught in school in the 50’s & early to mid 60’s.

The song is the perfect start to the concept album that is Crime of the Century. There is a theme that runs though the album, and it starts off with someone (possibly Rudy) in his younger years, and just starting to question life.
There is actually a school of thought (no pun intended) that the whole album was about insanity, and schizophrenia. Dreamer is certainly about that, but it could well be a man wrestling with his own alter ego's.
Personally I think it is a concept album that, through the life of one man, shows how volatile human emotions are. And the Crime of the Century? Well I believe it's a theme that Supertramp revisited a few times later. The crime is about people wasting their lives by doing nothing. It's the end of the story (If Everyone Was Listening I believe is about the main characters life drawing to a close) in a very fitting way.
Great album regardless!
@Stingfan The song Rudy is unique in that its the only one that tells a whole story with an introduction and two endings. The first ending is quite uplifting and dramatic. The second one is an epilogue "Rudy just came out the movie..." The song never repeats and allowed Rick to get on his Choo Choo to go toot toot!

First and foremost, I must say, Supertramp is an absolutley BRILLIANT band
Get ooooooout and let me speak one or more.
I must transport some China teenages'comment on this song. All of you said this song wants to convey that someone or something want to control us. Dont do this, dont do that … Ok, maybe we Chinese are purer and accustomed to be controlled When I listened to the brisk and psychedelic prelude, I had a illusion that I had came back to my primary high school, when I am at my 17."I can see you in the morning when you go to school" It is a moving memory that i cant go through anymore. I am 22 now, I am majoring in clinic medicine. And I live in campus dormitory with other three guys came from other city. I am not a sentimental man, but I cant blend myself with them. We say hi and goodbye everyday, but I feel no affection at all…… I am lonely,so I miss the past. Not for the previous friends, but myself, the pure myself, the fool myself, the ignorant myself, and the happy myself.
This all.
I love this song, but too distressed to listen.
this is all about how the teachers and such at school want you to be a certain way and dont want you learn what lfe;s really about
It's about conformity and how school is the way we get the way we become. Also says that the teachers don't allow children to express themselves in the way they should.
I would think.. :)
this is the quintessential "smartrock" rage against the machine.. with cool piano and harmonica solos
the best supertramp song
You are playing in the park** and i love this song
