When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh, it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily
Oh, joyfully, oh, playfully watching me
But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible
Logical, oh, responsible, practical
Then they showed me a world where I could be so dependable
Oh, clinical, oh, intellectual, cynical
There are times when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned?
I know it sounds absurd
Please tell me who I am
I said, now, watch what you say, they'll be calling you a radical
A liberal, oh, fanatical, criminal
Oh, won't you sign up your name? We'd like to feel you're acceptable
Respectable, oh, presentable, a vegetable
Oh, take, take, take it, yeah
But at night, when all the world's asleep
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please (oh, won't you tell me)
Please tell me what we've learned?
(Can you hear me?) I know it sounds absurd
(Oh, won't you tell me) please tell me who I am
Who I am, who I am, who I am
Ooh
Hey
'Cause I was feeling so logical
Yeah
D-D-D-D-D-D-D-Digital
Yeah, one, two, three, five
Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah
Ooh, it's getting unbelievable
Yeah
Getting, getting, yeah, yeah
Uh, uh, uh, uh
A miracle, oh, it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily
Oh, joyfully, oh, playfully watching me
But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible

Everyone's description is correct, but add the narrator being trans in a time before this whole lgbt revolution went overboard and being trans is normalized
@Sarahmint I always wondered if Roger Hodgson was secretly trans myself. If you watch music videos of him singing, you can occasionally distinctly see the woman in his face and expressions. I grew up in the 1970s and this was my personal theme song, especially when I was sent off to college in 1980 where I was finally able to begin to examine and explore my own transgenderness. I discovered that I was trans in 1970 at 8 years old, but didn't know what to call it then. Struggled with it my whole life but I was not able to begin my transition for real until age 54. Now almost a year and a half into the journey, I'm finally alive again, but facing a world of adversity..... so I now have a new theme song: Meredith Brook's "Bitch" :-)
