Smoke Lyrics

My lullaby, Hung out to dry,
Whats up with that,
It's over, Where are you dad, Mum's looking sad,
Whats up with that,
It's dark in here,
Why bleeding is breathing,
Your hiding, Underneath the smoke in the room,
Try, Bleeding is believing,
I used to, My mouth is dry, Forgot how to cry,
Whats up with that, Your hurting me,
I'm running fast, Can't Hide the past,
What's up with that, Your pushing me, Why, Bleeding is breathing,
Your hiding, underneath the smoke in the room,
Try, bleeding is believing, I used to,
Why, Bleeding is breathing,
Your hiding, underneath the smoke in the room,
Try, Bleeding is believing, I saw you crawling on the floor,
Why, Bleeding is believing,
Your hiding, Underneath the smoke in the room,
Try, Bleeding is believing, I saw you falling on the floor.)

this sounds stupid and over-analytical but it reminds me of abuse- a child hiding from the abuser.

also, 90% of children that have suffered severe abuse don't cry because their emotions are suppressed- hence the 'forgot how to cry'. And with abuse, the memory stays forever- 'can't hide the past'

i really dont know what it means to Natalie Imbruglia but i cry everytime i hear it for personal reasons...im actually listening to it now. ha.

@cherryXkiss It makes me cry for personal reasons as well. "I saw you crawling to the door" reminds me of when I was in 7th grade. I was emaciated to the point where you could see my bones and on the way to the cafeteria for lunch. I almost passed out from a anemia and wasting away. "I saw you crawling on the floor" reminds me of that moment when I had to hold on to the wall to keep from falling down and only one person asked me if I was okay. I went home and my mom didn't...

This is a fantastic Natalie Imbruglia song. "Torn" was cute and I liked it a lot, but this song puts "Torn" to shame - vocally, musically, and emotionally. This song just has so much meaning behind it and there is so much conviction in Natalie's voice as she belts it out.

well where to start you are all wrong, her mother had a HORRIBLE smoking habit to the point where her father was "underneath the smoke in the room" ...DUH

Where there's smoke, there's fire. Maybe her parents were having problems and her father was trying to crawl his way out. She asks where her dad is. Perhaps it's about divorce/abandonment? That could also explain the tears thing. Bleeding is believing, you're hiding. Maybe her mom was fighting Nat's father's escape attempt?

Or not.

.. the whole "why bleeding is breathing,.. bleeding is believing" i think its about.. the more u feel the more u live whats life really about.. the more we get hurt the more we realize how it works to live..to be here in this world..how ur whole perspective on life changes cuz of and through pain and failiors..and regrets and sacrifices..and the whole package pain can offer..its pretty sad..how most of us..have gone through really bad family issues...our parents getting divorced..the fact that no matter how they want to makes us believe they'll be there when we need them cuz "im here" they're not..they just leave us..as simple as that..and goin through that experience..we tend to be more selective with people..and how we tend to leave them 1st..before they have to chance to leave us..or hurt us..cuz we've been there done that..and we're not willing to go through that ever again..tough we will...cuz thats how life goes..people says it doesnt...but when our parents get divorced ..or something related to it..it changes us..for better or for worse..

it sounds like the cries of a cutter. neglect and abuse have taken their toll and now she's crying for her parents to help her, but to no avail.

"bleeding is breathing" pain is the only way to feel, as one can no longer feel emotions.

"bleeding is believing" to believe one still exists, to feel pain.

I absolutely love this song, it's so beautiful. My best friend gave it to me because she liked it and now I'm in love with this song! Heh.

I don't know what the song means though....

seriously this is such a good song, yeah one of her best. It seems to be about physical/emotional abuse: "Why, Bleeding is breathing", "Why, Bleeding is believing". I think it means: do you really need to bleed to know you are alive? Like is that the way to live, with her father hitting her and her mom 'hiding underneath the smoke.

I always thought it's about a child who's lost her father in a fire, hence "Where are you Dad?" I don't think she understands what's happened to him, she thinks he was "hiding underneath the smoke in the room" rather than dying, and maybe the "pushing me" could be her mother trying to help her escape...I dunno ^_^;

Awesome song tho :)
