Country House Lyrics
(And so the story begins)
City dweller, successful fella
Thought to himself
Oops I've got a lot of money
I'm caught in a rat race terminally
I'm a professional cynic
But my heart's not in it
I'm paying the price of living life at the limit
Caught up in the century's anxiety
Yes it preys on him, he's getting thin
Try the simple (life)
He lives in a house, a very big house in the country
Watching afternoon repeats
And the food he eats in the country
He takes all manner of pills
And piles up analyst bills in the country
Oh it's like an animal farm,
Lots of rural charm in the country
He's got morning glory, and life's a different story
Everything's going Jackanory
In touch with his own mortality
He's reading Balzac, knocking back Prozac,
It's a helping hand
That makes you feel wonderfully bland
Oh, it's the century's remedy for the faint at heart,
A new start
Try the simple (life)
He lives in a house, a very big house in the country
He's got a fog in his chest
So he needs a lot of rest in the country
He doesn't drink smoke laugh
Takes herbal baths in the country
You should come to no harm
On the animal farm in the country
In the country
In the country
In the country!
Blow blow me out I am so sad I don't know why.

Yeah i agree that it doesnt need much analysis, but i would like to add that this song came about after blur's manager had made enough money out of them and left
"Jackanory" is cockney rhyming slang. It means "story".
Jackanory, possibly from the old English poem:
Anyhow, great song, lots of fun. The meaning is pretty self-exp, but I love the chorus and the clever rhymes.
Noelly G, I take jackanory to mean "story" in this instance. "Everything's going jackanory" is another way of saying everything is going by the book (i.e. everything is going according to plan).
also cf. The Kinks - "House in the Country"
YES! While I am a huge fan of both Oasis and Blur, The fact that Country House beat Roll With it in one of the biggest chart battles ever was absolutely brilliant.
Pretty damn good song. Doesn't need much analysis, I think it says what it means pretty well.
My first ever Blur Song.... I JUST LOVE IT! And the lead singer looks really cute in the vid...
There is a nice dig at thier arch rival Oasis in the line But it does work on 2 levels.
"He's got morning glory, life's a different story"
This refers to the Oasis album (Whats The Story) Morning Glory. But it does work on 2 levels.
This song was released years before the Oasis album.
This song was released years before the Oasis album.
not actually a reference to oasis.
not actually a reference to oasis.
what does "jackanory" mean?
"Jackanory" is also a name of an old TV programme, I think you'll find. "He's got morning glory, and life's a different story, everything's going 'story'" doesn't really fit? I expect it to be that TV programme on about 40 year ago.
