Godhead's Lament Lyrics
Marauder
Staining the soil, midst of stillness
Beloved fraternity to an end
Red eyes probe the scene
All the same
Stilted for the beholder
Depravity from the core
Handcarved death in stoneladen aisles
I hide the scars from my past
Yet they sense my (mute) dirge
This is when it all falls apart
White hands grasping for straws
Sly smile, poisoned glare behind
Undisguised manmade nova
Mute cry, don't dare to tread
Searing beams tracking you down
Adoring what never has been
Some will bring with them all they have seen
Searching my way to perplexion
The gleam of her eyes
In that moment she knew
Thought I could not leave this place
On this imminent day
As I've reached the final dawn
To what's gone astray
What would they care if I did stay
No-one would know
What would they care if I did stay
No-one should know
Thought I could not leave this place
On this imminent day
As I've reached the final dawn
To what's gone astray
What would they care if I did stay
No-one would know
What would they care if I did stay
No-one should know
Still brooding, soothing clam
That rigid, twisted face
Blank godhead, tear my name
Lost virtue, frantic lust
Sly smile, poisoned glare behind
Undisguised manmade nova
Mute cry, don't dare to tread
Searing beams tracking you down
Adoring what never has been
Some will bring with them all they have seen
Searching my way to perplexion
In crumbling faith I saw her
Bearing her pain in the wilderness
The gleam of her eyes
In that moment she knew
Staining the soil, midst of stillness
Beloved fraternity to an end
Red eyes probe the scene
All the same

the main character is not refering to himself as a godhead, he's refering to melinda as a godhead because she has become a nun. this is revealed in a later song where she is described as "a harlot of God upon the earth."
the main character isn't an african slave, he's not othello... there are no themes of slavery or dominance mentioned in the album. the only reason people say that is because several things are described as being white. white is generally regarded as a symbol of purity and perhaps opeth is using it to create irony since the townspeople (the ones in white) are portrayed to be rather ruthless and uncaring zealots that hunt out the main character simply because he is different.
look at my comment to "the moor", i summed it up better there.
This, to me, is the most over-looked Opeth song ever. It's absolutely incredible, Mikael sings like a fucking ANGEL. I love it. And, to all those speculating about it, Still Life IS a concept album, indeed. Here's the rundown...
(The Moor): He returns to hometown, because he was booted out of his former home, accused of being a heretic.
(Godhead's Lament): He sees Melinda, a girl he loved when he was a child. She's also the reason he returned (he says this in The Moor)
(Benighted): He wants to ask Melinda to run off and elope with him.
(Moonlapse Vertigo): He fellows Melinda home at night, so he won't be spotted by anyone.
(Face Of Melinda): He meets Melinda, but, she tells him she's already married to another man ("she swore her vows to another")... but, he convinces her to run off with him, and she agrees because she truly loves him.
(Serenity Painted Death): Things take a turn for the worst as they try to elope, when Melinda is caught and killed for crimes against her husband. He swears his life to avenge her death.
(White Cluster): He is hanged.

still life is awesome.
the male character is agnostic. not an atheist.
pretty much right other than that i think. cant be arsed to write anymore so i'll sum it up.
opeth are perfect.
i still love all the idea's that the speaker is a black slave, but who is the godhead that laments in this song; surely not the speakers 'decrepid' maker mentioned in 'the moor', the speaker claims to be a godhead,'Blank godhead, tear my name' he uses the words my name not 'its name' the speaker believes himself to be a god, eloihim or 'mighty one', maybe even some kind of messiah. other than the 'decrepid' maker the only ones claiming to be gods in the bible are deamons.
what does agnostic mean?
ow i looked it up , no i think it would be wrong to say that the i person is agnostic because he really firmly completely is against religion, he is so strongly anti god in this album so atheist would fit better than agnostic
