The Apostle In Triumph Lyrics
In solitude I wander....
Through the vast enchanted forest
The surrounding skies are one
Torn apart by the phenomenon of lightning
Rain is pouring down my (now) shivering shoulders
In the rain my tears are forever lost
The darkened oaks are my only shelter
Red leaves are blown by the wind
An ebony raven now catches my eye
Sitting in calmness
Before spreading his black wings
Reaching for the skies
In this forest
Where wolves cry their agony unto the moon
My spirit is hidden
In the form of wisdom
carved on a black stone
The only way to follow
Open your soul
Redeem, I am immortal
Blinded by a light
My soul is held up in glory
I engulf the skies
The apostle in triumph
Through the eternal flame I travel
As the rain keeps falling....
Through the vast enchanted forest
The surrounding skies are one
Torn apart by the phenomenon of lightning
Rain is pouring down my (now) shivering shoulders
In the rain my tears are forever lost
Red leaves are blown by the wind
An ebony raven now catches my eye
Sitting in calmness
Before spreading his black wings
Reaching for the skies
Where wolves cry their agony unto the moon
My spirit is hidden
In the form of wisdom
carved on a black stone
The only way to follow
Redeem, I am immortal
My soul is held up in glory
I engulf the skies
The apostle in triumph
As the rain keeps falling....

The song is about Satan once being the apostle of god but after being banished to hell being the true triumphant and the most powerfull spirit (and not God). He is the one that inspired the ten commandments (wisdom carved on a black stone) and encourages humans to open their soul and be saved for he is immortal.
It is a brilliant song as all of the Orchid epics are!
Words cannot express how much I love this song. It is undeniably (at least in my opinion) the best song on Orchid, and one of Opeth's best EVER!
I mean...just listen to that violin riff!
the intro is great with the acoustics, my favorite part of the song, this song has lots of parts, 13 minutes long
Agreed, a great song. I like the acoustic intro and the last bit the best. Apparently that little ditty at the beginning was supposed to be the end of the previous track, "Requiem," but when they got it published the person who divided the tracks screwed up and cut it in the wrong place. Oh well, it still works as an intro!
Opeth's best song right here, perfect climax to their best album
its kind like slayer with thier raining blood song. kick ass
i wonder how to play this kick-ass intro.. anybody has tabulature?
Is it just me, or does Mikael say 'So Judah fucked it up' at the start? I swear he does. Listen to it, just before the heavy bit comes in with 'IN SOLITUDE I WANDER!' He whispers it, I swear...
Here's my interpretation. The song is about a man (the protagonist) who has preached all he can to a world of hate and evil, and has been heard by a deaf ear. The raven is a symbol of the omen of man's plight, which the main character was not able to avert in his lifetime. In his final hour he is being accepted into heaven as a reward for his noble attempts, but he is unsatisfied because he was unable to accomplish his goal "Through the eternal flame I travel, and the rain keeps falling..."
Straight from Mikeal: according to Ã…kerfeldt, he also said "The Apostle in Triumph" is lyrically "a combination of nature and satanic worship
