So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Pressure fried the coldest head
Bent to the side wishing he was dead
And I would still defend
I would still defend
I give up on it all
I give up on the greed
I give up on the ones
Who give up on me
Held up by the poor somewhere
There are unaware but I know we are scared
If I was to give in
The fight would soon begin
So I give up on it all
I give up on the greed
I'll give up on the ones
Who'll give up on me
Sometimes sunshine's
Sunshine
Sometimes the sun shines
Sunshine
Did you give up on it all
Did you give up on the greed
Did you give up on the ones
Who gave up on me
Bent to the side wishing he was dead
And I would still defend
I would still defend
I give up on it all
I give up on the greed
I give up on the ones
Who give up on me
Held up by the poor somewhere
There are unaware but I know we are scared
If I was to give in
The fight would soon begin
So I give up on it all
I give up on the greed
I'll give up on the ones
Who'll give up on me
Sometimes sunshine's
Sunshine
Sometimes the sun shines
Sunshine
Did you give up on it all
Did you give up on the greed
Did you give up on the ones
Who gave up on me

Really? Cool. I adore Ours. Distorted Lullabies is my favorite CD of all time.. I'm going to marry Jimmy Gnecco. :) The pain that he incoperates into the music isn't a gross sad "depression" its this beautiful raw feelings tha's bared for all to see. By the by, I think it's "WHO Gave up on me" not "Who'll give up on me" I think this because... it sounds like it already happened. To me its like, he was abandoned, pr scrwed around with by some people, friends or something. And before he just clung onto them, begging forgiveness, trying to make it better, doing everything he could to remedy the situation. But now its just like a "screw it". An "I won't hang around, i won't do anything. They gave up on me. So I m giving upon them". I mean, I'm not saying that actually happened to him. I think it either, happened when he was younger, or he's realting a situation. I don't know. That's what happened to me though. I mean, I "gave up on the ones who gave up on me", so that's why it means that to me. I bet you didn't read that! :)
