Goodbye, Goodnight Lyrics
.:: Goodbye, Goodnight ::.
A flower for your vanity, a penny for your thoughts
About the world's insanity and how we've gotten lost
Strike up the band to play a song as we go waltzing by
And fake a smile as we all say goodbye
Goodbye, oh goodbye
Say a prayer for recognition, kiss the ones you love
Gather up the ammunition, sigh for all the lost
Strike up the band to play a song as we go waltzing by
And fake a smile as we all say goodbye
Raise a glass for ignorance, drink a toast to fear
The beginning of the end has come that's why we all are here
Strike up the band to play a song and try hard not to cry
And fake a smile as we all say goodbye
Goodbye
About the world's insanity and how we've gotten lost
Strike up the band to play a song as we go waltzing by
And fake a smile as we all say goodbye
Gather up the ammunition, sigh for all the lost
Strike up the band to play a song as we go waltzing by
And fake a smile as we all say goodbye
The beginning of the end has come that's why we all are here
Strike up the band to play a song and try hard not to cry
And fake a smile as we all say goodbye
Goodbye

gee i wish someone would explain this song to me. but even though i don't know, its a pretty sweet song.
Goodbye, Goodnight is the story of the Titanic sinking, told from the perspective of the orchestra.
no, actually this is a song about how the saved will leave the unsaved behind, and how sad it is that they don't know the truth. they think they're just fine and dandy and don't know what's waiting for them. It's also to make christians realize how important it is to preach the gospel, because the world is headed for hell and they don't even realize it.
I think gracetbe is right. I love the line about "fake a smile as we all say goodbye". It's like they know something's wrong but pretend to be happy.
Well, I've definitely heard that it's about the Titanic (or at least references it), and it seems to fit.

about the titanic??? doesn't sound like jars of clay to me...wow i think this song is more about the superficial face of life, i sort of agree with the "saved leaving the unsaved behind", but i think it's more people just not wanting to change what they've always known...
...Which is what you have to do to get saved. I don't disagree.
thankyou gracebe for explaining the meaning of the song, i seriously doubt it would be about titanic... as Jars of Clay are a christian band it would be a little weird for them to randomly do a song that is about the titanic... great song either way though :D
Yes! the Titanic. That's what I thought it was about from day ONE. I bought this cd back in the day when it first came out too.
what's dose being a christian band have to do with not making a titanic song? that's just silly. however, i like this song a lot, and i have a hard time thinking it's just about the titanic.
