Five Candles (You Were There) Lyrics
.:: Five Candles (You Were There) ::.
A promise or a dare
I would jump if I knew you'd catch me
Staring over the edge
I can't tell if you'll be here for me
I close my eyes and make a wish
Turn out the lights and take a breath
Pray that when the wick is burned
You would say that it's all about love
Chorus:
You were there when I needed you
You were there when the skies broke wide, wide open
You were there when I needed you
You were there when the skies broke wide, wide open
You were never here
I remember you said
Love was more than your good intentions
Empty boxes on the floor
Things I never asked you for
I pray that when the wick is burned
You would say that it's all about love
[Chorus]
I can't see the promise of
Excuses you fall upon
I pray to God not holding on
To things you've left undone
[Chorus x 2]
You were there when I
You were there when I
You were there when I needed you
I would jump if I knew you'd catch me
Staring over the edge
I can't tell if you'll be here for me
Turn out the lights and take a breath
Pray that when the wick is burned
You would say that it's all about love
You were there when the skies broke wide, wide open
You were there when I needed you
You were there when the skies broke wide, wide open
Love was more than your good intentions
Empty boxes on the floor
Things I never asked you for
I pray that when the wick is burned
You would say that it's all about love
Excuses you fall upon
I pray to God not holding on
To things you've left undone
You were there when I
You were there when I needed you

This sounds like a song about a five-year-old's birthday with parents that are separated ("You were there when I needed you" but "You were never here"). The empty boxes, the things he didn't ask for, closing the eyes, making a wish... all of this sounds like a birthday. The child turns to God to pray that the problems (the excuses and what-not) will be fixed somehow.
Hmm, I first heard this song on a love song, music sampler. It didn't seem to fit in there; but it doesn't seem to be Christian either. japhy put a new spin on it; I like that idea
japhy is right. The song was written for the soundtrack of the movie Liar Liar, which focuses on a five-year-old who wishes on his birthday that his attorney father (Jim Carrey) would be unable to tell a lie for a day.
