Workin' For MCA Lyrics

Seven years of hard luck, comin' down on me
From the Florida border, yea up to Nashville Tennessee
I worked in every joint you can name, mister every honkytonk
Along come Mr Yankee Slicker, sayin' maybe you're what I want

Want you to sign your contract
Want you to sign today
Gonna give you lots of money
Workin' For MCA

9000 dollars, that's all we could win
But we smiled at the Yankee Slicker with a big ol' Southern grin
They're gonna take me out to California gonna make me a superstar
Just pay me all of my money and mister maybe you won't get a scar

Want you to sign your contract
Want you to sign today
Gonna give you lots of money
Workin' For MCA

Suckers took my money since I was seventeen
If it ain't no pencil pusher, it got to be a honkytonk queen
But I'll sign my contract baby, and I wan't you people to know
That every penny that I make, I'm gonna see where my money goes

Want you to sign your contract
Want you to sign today
Gonna give you lots of money

skynyrd wrote this song for the night they were to play for the MCA exects. when they played it they blew the exects away and got a record deal right off. they always opened their concerts with it. a badass song

ha! its about how MCA gave them very little of the money they made "and I wan't you people to know That every penny that I make, I'm gonna see where my money goes"

The meaning of this song is straightforward.

For me, a kick ass song to listen to as a southerner gone north for job opportunities. Cultures change and people look at you differently, down at you, simply from being from somewhere. Then you just smile with that big ole southern grin and make your money. All the while knowing how the system works. Gotta see where that money goes.

It, like basically all of skynyrd's lyrics, is autobiographical. The song tells the story of the night they were 'discovered' in an Atlanta bar by an MCA A&R rep. The Yankee Slicker, however, is Al Kooper who produced their first albums.
