Scars And Stitches Lyrics

Can you remember?
What the future held
A little candy ring
And a mystic oceans shell
But they were all anesthetized
And slowly washed away
Left all the poison in the sands in which I played
I don’t mind falling down and scraping up my knees
Scars and Stitches always fade and only strengthen me
But with my eyes as wide as pearls
My only centerpiece
Is taken like a dead mans urn and tossed into the sea
Write me like a letter
And dot your I’s and cross you T’s
Nothing was everything to me
Under the monsters claws and in between his teeth
Was the shadow and a silhouette of what I’d thought I’d be?
I don’t mind falling down and scraping up my knees
Scars and Stitches always fade and only strengthen me
But with my eyes as wide as pearls
My only centerpiece
Well it’s taken like a dead mans urn and tossed into the sea

I absolutely love this song! We were given an assignment in English last year to create a CD that reflected our "philosophy on life" and then write a paper on it. One of my best friends suggested this song because the chorus was exactly what I was looking for.

One question though... what does the rest of the song mean? I'm not sure I completely understand what it's about.

i think this song is talking about how you felt your life would be as a child. how everything was going to be so perfect, and you'd grow up getting everything you wanted. but now that you're grown up, you realize what life really is. that it's far from perfect. and so he's accepting the fact that he has to work for things and he doesn't mind having to fall down and maybe get hurt emotionally and physically. but he's throwing away his expections of himself from long ago, "a dead man", and starting over, just living life as best he can.

I think it is also about the innocence of childhood, when you are wide-eyed and naive, and find interest in a simple seashell or ring. Eventually, though, you grow up and the innocence is washed away, leaving only the bad stuff, or "the poison in the sands in which I played."

"they were anesthetized and slowly washed away"

this line has taken on new meaning for me after taking intro biology. Poor fruit flies...
