To me this song sounds like its about a Heroin junkie. Their my mistakes their not your problem. Is telling everybody else that him being a hewroin addict is his own fault so everyone around him that is worrying about him should just go away because its not their problem. Just look at the chorus. "Another day a perfect day a twinge of pain the sting of a neddle." That is the junkie waking up to another day and nedding heroin to make is day perfect. "warm never felt so kind And for a moment or two I leave it all behind." This is when he is high on the drug for a moment or two he forgets all his problems because he is high. But when he comes down he will be a black dog in white picket fences. Thats an irony because its a black dog surronded by white picket fences, hes the black dog surronded by the rest of the world which is the white picket fences. He is by himself. "dancing in the riptide" Is the effect of his decesion for using drugs. The riptide symbolizes heroin. A riptide takes you away from the shore not letting you escape. Thats what heroin does. It takes a hold of you it keeps bringing you out further and further. The lyrics I pray my spul to keep tonite" Meens he doesnt want to die. He doesnt want to OD. Then the last lyrics symbolize his eed for the drug. "When all the walls start staring back a perfect day a sting for the last time." It shows that a day wont be perfect unless the walls are staring back which means unless he is high. This song is haunting it kinda scares me. you know you hit rock bottom when you need to wake up each day needing herion to make it a good day.

i agree that it's about heroine addiction. it's funny though because on allmusic.com the reviewer calls perfect a "peppy sway". it makes me think the reviewer didn't actually listen to the song.
not a wierd meaning at all whoever said that. appreciate the fact that people do different things than you see acceptable. anyway, i love this song, its so true to the subject. if anyone has ever done that stuff, you'll be able to relate 100% to this song, it really does describe the feeling completely. i really love the reference to "Perfect Day" by Lou Reed also, they had that in mind completely.
side not: dont try to analyze a song about heroin, and talk about effects of heroin and the lifestyle if you have obviously never been within a square mile of it.

a progression of heroin experiences: 1st) intrigued by it, he joined in. His pain is left behind. 2nd) he resents other people in his business, anything he has done or will do is his responsibility. He is unconcerned with the danger as he leaves his pain behind. 3) Sting. Warm. The best kind of warm. For the moment, everything else is gone. 4) Black dog is lingo for craving heroin. White picket fences are probably heroin needles then. Heroin feels like a riptide. 5) Heroin normally makes just sitting and staring at the walls pleasant. But this experience is one of paranoia. The walls are staring back. From now on no more heroin.
