This is by far my favorite Rentals Song. I think basically this is just a feel-good kind of song, wanting to go out and meet new people. This would have made a great second single to "Getting By."
I think that this song might be referring to a extremley hard to find documentary called The Cruise. It is this documentary about this this new york tour guide, Anthony Speed Levitch, (you might know him from the bridge scene in Waking Life.) And...it's sort of hard to explain. I will get some quotes from it up here soon.
there is a demo version of this song, and during the quiet part after the breakdown there is a guy who is like, making this speech. in the final cut, the only part that stayed in was "but mostly we keep it alive" in the very end
I think it is about just like... doing what you like and not worrying about it, you know? I have to say, I love the lines "Jump with you, sleep with you, cheat on our soulmates and find, some people care and some they don't mind."
