Smile Lyrics

Don't it make you smile? (x2)
When the sun don't shine, (it don't shine at all.)
Don't it make you smile?

Don't it make you smile?
Don't it make me smile? Yeah.
When the sun don't shine, it don't shine at all. Yeah.
Don't it make me smile?

I miss you already. I miss you always.
I miss you already, yeah. I miss you all day.
This is how I feel.

I miss you already, yeah. I miss you always.
Three crooked hearts. Swirls all around, yeah.
I miss you all day.

Don't it make you smile? (x2)
Three crooked hearts. Swirls all around.
Don't it make you smile?

I believe this song has to do with a note he got from Dennis Flemion from the cult band "The Frogs." On the No Code cd the lyrics are on a note and is signed from Dennis. Eddie introduced Dennis at a show I was at in Alpine Valley right before they sang the song "Smile." The Frogs toured with Pearl Jam for a while and are from Milwaukee. Good song though.

At the show there was something wrong with the harmonica that Eddie was playing and he chucks it and sort of laughs when he starts singing "Don't it make you smile." Awesome memory.

Iwonder why nobody posted a coment on this song... It reminds me of much, and reminds Eddie Vedder too i bet..

This song just makes me smile! For a long time I thought the lyrics went: "gonna make you smile"... But since finding out the actual lyrics, the song got that much better! I am listening to it, and smiling as I write this! It makes me smile!

Might not be true, but I heard Ed just found a note somewhere with this stuff written on it and used it for lyrics..kinda like how jeff overheard someone talking about guns and jotted down "glorified g." Unless that's not true either. Heh, interpreting is fun.

@Nasus Might be wrong, but maybe you were thinking of the Beatles' "Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite" which was indeed written from a 19th century circus poster John Lennon found in an antique shop.

Ever seen the Touring Band video for this? It's just the band having a great time doing all sorts of stuff. 'Three crooked hearts. Swirls all around' puzzles me though...

I think that stuff was just drawn on the note Ed found..it's in the liner notes for the song. The words aren't written, but there are 3 crooked ass hearts & a bunch of swirls.

Smile reeks of Neil Young,..and the chromatic G tuned harmonica puts some life in the song..... I think this song is about eddie admiring a friend's ability to Smile when the sun dont shine..... but i am not sure.... I also think it could have come from a note like nasus said...

It could be from a note someone else wrote-- in the No Code CD case, the lyrics are included and it's definitely not in Vedder's writing.

Oh, right. Like these guys are saying. Guess I could have read before commenting.

I remember I once heard that the lyrics are what a fan had written on a postcard to the band, and scribbled on the card were three crooked hearts, with swirls all around.
