In My Tree Lyrics
Up here in my tree, yeah
Newspapers matter not to me, yeah
No more crowbars to my head, yeah
I'm trading stories with the leaves instead, yeah
Wave to all my friends, yeah
They don't seem to notice me, no
All their eyes trained on the street, yo, oh
Sidewalk cigarettes and scenes, (tem-pted)
Up here so high I start to shake
Up here so high the sky I scrape
I'm so high I hold just one breath here within my chest
Just like innocence
(Eddie's down in his home)
(Oh, the blue sky it's his home)
(Eddie's blue sky home)
(Oh, the blue sky it's his home)
I remember when, yeah
I swore I knew everything, oh yeah
Let's say knowledge is a tree, yeah
It's growing up just like me, yeah
I'm so light the wind he shakes
I'm so high the sky I scrape
I'm so light I hold just one breath and flew back to my nest
Sleep with innocence...
Up here so high the boughs they break
Up here so high the sky I scrape
Had my eyes peeled both wide open, and I got a glimpse
Of my innocence... got back my inner sense...
Baby got it, still got it
Newspapers matter not to me, yeah
No more crowbars to my head, yeah
I'm trading stories with the leaves instead, yeah
They don't seem to notice me, no
All their eyes trained on the street, yo, oh
Sidewalk cigarettes and scenes, (tem-pted)
Up here so high I start to shake
Up here so high the sky I scrape
I'm so high I hold just one breath here within my chest
Just like innocence
(Oh, the blue sky it's his home)
(Eddie's blue sky home)
(Oh, the blue sky it's his home)
I swore I knew everything, oh yeah
Let's say knowledge is a tree, yeah
It's growing up just like me, yeah
I'm so light the wind he shakes
I'm so high the sky I scrape
I'm so light I hold just one breath and flew back to my nest
Sleep with innocence...
Up here so high the sky I scrape
Had my eyes peeled both wide open, and I got a glimpse
Of my innocence... got back my inner sense...
Baby got it, still got it

I see it as a metaphor of some sort...not sure exactly...but it's Eddie's way of confronting loneliness, abandonement, isolation, etc. Is it just me or is No Code one of the most underrated albums of all time??!
I always took the meaning of song to be that Eddie, becoming so sick of the media and people's expectations of him, retreats to a place (in his mind, or otherwise) where he can feel completely isolated, safe and above all happy. It's, metaphorically, his tree where he can look about and see everything from up high, and it's all so much simpler. His friends all keep there heads down and are stuck in the real world, so he can't be with them for those few moments where he retreats and feels "innocent" all over again.
It's just basically about escapism and the precious moments we can have to ourselves.
the song to me is about taking a look at the world from a safe place. the world seems more peaceful when you see it from a distance. just relaxing and enjoying life, or taking time out to just relax a bit, and enjoy the company around you. you can see what a good person you are if you give yourself a chance.
this song has some different levels of meaning 1 hes just stoned "i'm so high i hold this one breath deep within my chest" 2 hes grown in a way that people dont notice/understand "i wave to all my friends, they dont seem to notice me" " "knowledge is a tree. its growing up just like me" 3 hes somehow regressed "i caught a glimpse of my innocense, i got my innocense, still got it" "i go back to my nest, sleep in innocense" 4 hes broken free of everyday constraints and has found some peace "newspapers matter not to me. no more crowbars to my head. im trading stories with the leaves instead" personally, i think the song is about some expereince that encompassed all of those things for eddie
yes, deathrockboy, no code is seriously underrated. its hard for me to say i have a favorite pj song, but if i did say that, it would have to be this song. i dont even want to speculate on what it means. i dont want to try to define the emotions it makes me feel. its just that good.
I agree completely with all of you who think this is PJ's most under-rated album. It's probably my favorite one and this is my favorite PJ song of all-time. Although I think it's about how Eddie was dealing with all of the problems that come with fame and success, it has a lot of personal meaning for me, too.
I think that this song and this album are mainly about simplicity and the beauty of nature.
The narrator likes the view from being in hte tree, and now that he is up there he is made happier and happier at his distance from "society" and his nearness to that which is real and beautiful...Nature
While I dont think that this song is drug inspired, I do get reminded of my younger, "more carefree" days when I hear it. A friend of mine who had a party house that was full everynight would sometimes take large quantities of acid and go down to the park down the road and climb this huge pine tree. We would do this in the summer or the winter, dusk or dawn. I am terribly afraid of heights but would find myself 30 feet off the ground in this big tree, feeling safe, watching cars go by, watching people walk their dogs and shovel their sidewalks....it was very peaceful up there and we would sway in the breeze for hours and not even speak. That is what this song means to me.
Eddie told a story on their last tour about how he and Chris used to climb trees together, right before playing this song.
Chris was his tree.
This song is about that girl who lived in the tree
This song is about that girl who lived in the tree--Julia Rainbow something or other, I forget her name. Anyway, she was big in the news for a bit.
