Out of Step (With the World) Lyrics
(I) Don't smoke
Don't drink
Don't fuck
At least I can fucking think
I can't keep up
Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Out of step with the world
Don't drink
Don't fuck
At least I can fucking think
Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Out of step with the world

When Ian wrote this song, the rest of the band was kinda pissed at him, because they felt he was being far too preachy, and was testifying instead of leading. The rest of the band weren't actually straight-edge, but everybody just assumed they were. They felt that Ian's lyrics were just outlining new rules for all his fans, lots of whom would follow whatever Ian said, and they didn't like it. Ian was actually just outlining his own philosophies, but since he IS kinda preachy (not always a bad thing) that's just how it came out. There was a big fight, and he ended up adding in the "(I)" at the beginning as a compromise, so the song wouldn't sound so much like it was telling people how to live their lives.
Animals also brutally kill and eat each other. Raw. You gonna start doing that too? You probably think pot is great too cause its "natural".
@JoshMahurin So fkn what if he does?? Stop judging other people, we don't judge you for not wanting to fuck, smoke, drink, fight or have fund do we???

i think this song is about how the real people have it so hard because they arent like everyone else
Minor Threat really kicked off the straight edge culture with this song. It's the whole philosophy that the youth should be focusing on things more important than drugs, such as society.
"Straight-edge refers to a philosophy that's most basic tenets promote a drug free lifestyle. It developed as an offshoot of the punk rock/hardcore scenes of the early 1980's when the term itself is believed to have been coined by Ian Mackaye, in the self titled song, while he was the singer of the seminal hardcore band, Minor Threat. Mackaye eschewed the nihilistic tendencies of punk rock, promoting instead the simple (almost simplistic) philosophy of "don't drink/ don't smoke/ don't fuck." " --- From straight-edge.com
Minor Threat is the best band ever. with their basic guitar parts and strong song writing, they revolutionized the whole punk rock scene.

Pretty self-explanitory. Three short steps to healthy living and a positive attitude. How many times I've wanted to scream this at someone that asked me to get high with them or for a cigarette. Or everytime someone tells me how drunk they got at a party and had sex with someone, but didn't know too. "YOU DON'T DRINK AND FUCK RANDOM GIRLS, YOU MUST BE A FAG!" I don't know, I guess I'm just a romantic.
this is such a good song. Ian Mackaye is one smart mother fucker.
