This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
Hey now, hey now
What's the matter with you?
Girls just wanna have fun now
Come on
Hey now, hey now
What's the matter with you?
Girls just wanna have fun now (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I come home in the morning light
My mother says, "When you gonna live your life right"
Oh, mommy dear, we're not the fortunate ones
And girls, they wanna have fun
Oh, girls they wanna have
Hey now, hey now
What's the matter with you
Girls just wanna have fun now
Come on
The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells, "whatchu gonna do with your life?"
Oh daddy dear, you know you're still number one
But girls they wanna have fun
Oh, girls they wanna have
That's all they really want, some fun
When the working day is done
You know girls they wanna have fun
Come on
Hey now, hey now
What's the matter with you?
Girls just wanna have fun now
Come on
Hey now, hey now
What's the matter with you?
Girls just wanna have fun now
And the boys they wanna have fun
And the girls they wanna have fun
And the boys they wanna have fun
And the girls they wanna have
Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world
I wanna be the one to walk in the sun
Hey now, hey now
What's the matter with you?
Girls just wanna have fun now
Come on
Hey now, hey now (when the working day is done)

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
When you are not involved with anyone, it's a free world out there...especially on the weekends when the music is invigorating; the crowds are larger; and the margaritias are flowing. Classic song!
And here's to my college roommie who introduced me to Cyndi Lauper and this song. Our upstairs apartment used to blast Lauper. It was the early 80's and music was just FUN. He always said he was "one of the girls" and he really could cook; bake; and clean better than I! Lauper's wonderful....way ahead of her time, at least back then.
I wish today's kids would have more knowledge of Lauper and just how cutting edge she was (lyrically) back in the 80's. This song is perfect for those of us who are single...it's about hanging out with friends and having fun w/o worry. Just LUV Lauper!
