So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
You're always dancing down the street
With your suede blue eyes
And every new boy that you meet
He doesn't know the real surprise
(Here she comes again)
When she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
Ooh, she'll make you flip
(Here she comes again)
When she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
I kinda like the way she dips
She's my best friend's girl
She's my best friend's girl
But she used to be mine
You've got your nuclear boots
And your drip dry glove
Ooh when you bite your lip
It's some reaction to love, o-ove, o-ove
(Here she comes again)
When she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
Yeah, I think you'll flip
(Here she comes again)
When she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
(Here she comes again)
I kinda like the way, I like the way she dips
'Cause she's my best friend's girl
Well she's my best friend's girl
And she used to be mine
She's so fine
You're always dancing down the street
With your suede blue eye-eyes
And every new boy that you meet
Doesn't know the real surprise
(Here she comes again)
When she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
(Here she comes again)
Oh, she'll make you flip
(Here she comes again)
When she's dancing 'neath the starry sky
(Here she comes again)
I kinda like the way, I like the way she dips
'Cause she's my best friend's girl, uh
She's my best friend's girl-irl uh-irl
She used to be mine
She so, fine
(My best friend's girlfriend) oh
(My best friend's girlfriend)
She used to be mine
(My best friend's girlfriend) yeah yeah

This would be the perfect 80s song, except it came out in 1978.
Yeah, pretty self explanatory as far as meaning.
@blacksabfan The song "Cars" by Gary Newman often makes it onto 80s playlists. It was released in 1979.
this song is so cool...except that it's about being infatuated with your bestfriends girl/boy friend...which really sucks...
This song could be about me! I didnt do it on purpose but i dated 3 guys who were in the same group of friends..so I'm the best friend's girl! It's an awesome song though..definatly!
@KristiNH Probably all at the same time.
I am a best friends girl........
True story: I used to work with a bloke who's wife had dumped him to run off with his twin brother. This song came on the radio and he was heard singing along quietly - "she's my brother's girl..... she used to be mine". Ouch.
The perfect 80s song. Every time I hear it I get taken back.
gotta love this song... really catchy, like a bunch of other cars songs tho. still, not their best.
This seems to always happen to guys because they pretetnd to not care when their friends date their x girlfriends. And as always the male spieces wants what they can't have and their x becomes more appealing because of their unattainable status. Every girl knows this feeling.
@DancingHippie Their not friends. I have a half eaten leftover bologna sandwich on a plate in my fridge, do you want that too? Who wants friends who are poachers. Never introduce your wife/gf to your friends.
"here she comes again"
his best friend's girl is multiply orgasmic, that's the "real suprise" "every new boy that she meets" doesn't know
many of ric ocasek's songs contain convoluted sexual innuendo
@Fluffyinsanity '<br /> <br /> '...his best friend's girl is multiply (sic) orgasmic, that's the "real suprise" (sic) ...'<br /> <br /> Or she has BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder)
just a great song.
