I interpret this song as being about, perhaps, him having a friend who was in love with some chick but then his friend wasn't able to live up to her expectations ("he never did try hard enough"). And then, afterwards, the chick leaves his friend and then comes to him, but he doesn't want to get into it because he knows he'll end up the same as his friend and not live up.
