The song was written by Mellencamp in response to fan questions regarding what became of Jack and Diane. The song is Jack reminiscing about the life they had together while they are now separated or divorced.
Yet another song about a guy missing his girl and questioning their times together. I didn't realize there were this many songs with this theme.
