I take this song to be ironic. It's saying that, in truth, blame doesn't 'cure anything' even though you can apply it to anything ('broad latitude'). To blame is to become a victim and give up control, not be in charge of your own direction: "throw the rudder down."

And Mike Doughty does write poetry, go dig screenwriter's blues

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right. Especially about the whole "broad latitude" thing.

And "Screenwriter's Blues" is one of the best poems (songs) I've ever heard.

@~Doyle i agree totally

Like much of El Oso, this is pretty clearly Doughty's view on the vast gap that opened between him and the rest of the band. If you read his book he's very open about how they blamed him for everything - this is him in passive aggressive mode saying fine, blame me for everything that's gone wrong, it'll make you feel better at least.

..gotta figure it's about sailing. doughty doesn't write poetry, he drops hints stylishly.

I'd always figured it was about how if you ever have a problem you just find a scapegoat and everything is fine. The world is big enough you can find someone to blame.

The larger problem is those who blame themselves for everything; can't forgive themselves; and then coddle the blame to have an excuse for not progressing in whatever it is they want to do (but are too fearful to do). Yes, I'm Dr. Spock...and obnoxious...and know everything :D So what cha gonna do 'bout it ;)

At first, I would always hear it as "throw the runner out". Maybe I've been watching too much baseball.
