This song always makes me smile too. It's sweet but not too sapppy.
I love this song! The little things about it really stand out: I think the switch from "maybe" to "baby" is a nice touch. I also love the way Rhett Miller's (awesome) voice raises up on the "yes," like an ecstatic female's voice would.
The Old 97's were in Austin doing a show because Rhetts sister was getting married here and they did that song and dedicated it to her. it was so sweet.
I saw Rhett at a solo show in NYC in 2000, before the CD was recorded and I believe it was one of the first times he played this song in public. He told the story of being in England and a friend had just proposed to his girlfriend and he was inspired to write it after that. He said she was an actress and very dramatic - I believe her name is Scarlett. I don't remember it all, but the way he told the story is great. If you can ever see him perform solo, you should. He always has great banter between songs and you'll find out great background info on a lot of them.
