what I think this song means is that the woman has a hard time in love and tries to make herself believe she doesn't need love but secretly knows she needs it. and then she finds someone who has stolen for her heart and realzies the loneliness is not what she wants and finds herself much much happier being in love.
to me this song is talking about a girl that falls in love and doesnt understand why people are afraid to experience such a wonderful feeling. but hey...if you get burned, you are gonna be a little scared to jump back in there(in my opinion). all i know is i am not scared to be head over heals in love with my joe. :)

its pretty freaky that the lines of this song are telling my heart without me even trying!! when i sit down to write my own songs i am so tempted to actually start my song with the lines "I cannot help it, I couldn't stop it if I tried. Michelle Branch is my favorite female artist ever, and she is extremely talented especially in song writing. she is my idol and i look up to her so damn much. michelle branch fans, rock on!!
