Whatever I Fear Lyrics

there's almost nothing left
you eat my kind for breakfast
what did i expect?
to come here and find anyone?
find open arms to greet me
and friends to feed me
i sicken myself so much
and you eat my kind for breakfast
you eat my kind

whatever i fear the most is whatever i see before me
whenever i let my guard down, whatever i was ignoring
whatever i fear the most is whatever i see before me
whatever i have been given, whatever i have been

seeing myself this way
i am a monster i believe
and seeing is believing
is there no doubt left
when i poison myself
and poison leaves no appetite
i sicken myself so much
i sicken myself so

whatever i fear the most is whatever i see before me
whenever i let my guard down, whatever i was ignoring
whatever i fear the most is whatever i see before me
whatever i have been given, whatever i have been

did we expect these things to change
by waking up and suddenly there they are
and all i need's a starting place
and nothing ever seemed so hard...

whatever i fear the most is whatever i see before me
whenever i let my guard down, whatever i was ignoring
whatever i fear the most is whatever i see before me
whatever i have been given, whatever i have been

This song was really a rude awakening for me. I mean, I had spent pretty much my entire life sitting around waiting for things to come to me because I was too afraid to venture out and take the world on by my own hand. In an interesting twist of irony, I had decided to take a trip to Brazil (from the US) alone, and I heard this song on the airplane (had the Fear CD, just hadn't had a chance to listen to the whole thing until that trip) and when I heard this song, it made me stop and think. I must have listened to the song at least a good 30 times in a row, and it still impacts me to hear it now. It's all in the "Did we expect these things to change..." verse.

The whole Fear/PS thing has already been covered, but aside from that... that is what I got from the song myself. The idea that we need to take responsibility for the things we want from life. Don't wait for things to happen, take on the change yourself.

Though, then, there is that line "Nothing ever seemed so hard" hits me in the jaw each time. I know what I want. I have the talent to do it. But where do I begin? I never seem to know the first step.

This song is about using self-recrimination as a defense mechanism against taking responsibility for your own life. I don't see it as being about substance abuse, but the psychology of addiction definitely comes into play.

I assume you mean you heard it on the Coil cd. Fear doesn't have 'Whatever I Fear' on it.

My mistake, it was actually on the PS album that I heard it. I don't have Coil. Thanks for the correction, though!

An excellent album, and I like this track the most, but it is close to two other tracks.

I interpret alcohol or drug abuse is this song. Especially in the second verse and bridge. Someone has become consumed by an addiction and they are now scared of the world. The addiction has left them ashamed and weak. So weak that they have absolutely no self confidence and they know that anyone could, "Eat their kind for breakfast". "...A starting place, and nothing's ever been so hard" - Trying to break an addiction.
