This definitely sounds like an addiction song to me...does anyone know if glen phillips had any drug problems?
I don't know about 'addictions', though a lot of songs of Glen's seem to deal with that issue. However, Glen has spoken about his bouts with his chronic chemical depression and issues with taking (and not taking) "happy drugs" to deal with it throughout his life.

It's definatly about an addiction to something. Either a drug, or a relationship. i'm leaning towards drugs. "yes i will, anything you say". something has a hold on him. I think everyone has had the feeling of knowing something is bad for them, but being too damn tired to stop. great song
I agree with searching4meaning. Definetly about addiction, but can be either drugs or a relationship. I've been addicted to a person before and this is a very fitting song for that.

I think this song is definitely an addiction to a drug and someone is nagging him about it. He's done it a thousand times and has tried to quit a thousand times and he's telling this person that he will stop and do anything for their forgiveness. He asks "Joe" for a buck for some "food" but really he uses it to get a drug of some kind, and 2 hours later his addiction is "lapping at his heals" again.
This song is definitely about drug addiction, and the things people will do for a hit. By the sounds of the lyrics, this is probably a fairly hardcore drug - not something like booze or weed. More like pain killers, heroin, or even crack. Something that will come back in 2 hours is usually pretty hardcore.
Finally, it's possible that the author isn't the singer, but this might be the story of someone the guys in the band knew that did have a drug problem.
I concur with those who said this song is about a drug addiction. Furthermore, the title itself offers a clue to this. When you do drugs you get "high", so it seems logical that when you "come back down" it means you are getting down from that high.
This doesn't necessarily mean Glen or anyone in the band had a drug problem, though. It could be about someone they know, or just something they decided to write about for whatever reason.
