I feel like both the lines "..love like an infant.." mean to love, but not interfere. Let your infant learn to stand up on its own, and, I guess, crawl away scared.
this song is in a depressing mode, but the comparison he uses to an infant struggling to get off the ground is more one of hope that this stuggle he has with himself and love will eventually get off the ground and get going.
