Stories Of Old Lyrics

Take a look at unselected cases
You'll find love has been wrecked
By both sides compromising
Amounting to a disastrous effect

You hear stories of old
Of princes bold
With riches untold
Happy souls
Casting it all aside
To take some bride
To have the girl of their dreams
At their side
But not me
I couldn't do that
Not me
I'm not like that

I couldn't sacrifice
Anything at all
To love

I really like you
I'm attracted to you
The way you move
The things you do
I'll probably burn in hell
For saying this
But I'm really in heaven
Whenever we kiss
But Oh no!
You won't change me
You can try
For an eternity

I wouldn't sacrifice
Anything at all
To love

Now I've got things to do
You have too
And I've got to be me
You've got to be you
So take my hand
And feel these lips
And let's savour a kiss
Like we'd savour a sip
Of vintage wine
One more time
Let's surrender
To this love divine

But we won't sacrifice
Anything at all
To love

This is easily one of my top 5 DM songs. It's silly and embarrassing to admit to this, but I've often felt this way about relationships I've been in. This song verbalizes that feeling very well. It's obviously a bit juvenile compared of their later works, but that doesn't mean it's any less awesome.

I love it too also. I think DM should play it in concerts.

about a relationship where one partner wants the other to change his very being, but his reply is that he wont change for love and he finds that they just should enjoy their love without trying to change each other. but thats obvious

it can mean one of two things (a) that the narrator only likes his partner for sex and socializing and THAT'S IT (he won't sacrifice his "freedom" and material property to make a life with a partner or (b) he is telling his partner that he will not change who he is and she should accept him as he is, because he accepts her as he is.

The meaning is more obvious in this song than in most Depeche Mode songs. Great song.

@monster36604 So you think this is about Martin and Dave, about how Martin can't ever commit to exclusivity and how he has to compartmentalise to stay sane?

I absoutely adore this song...it's very under-rated. The meaning is pretty obvious, it's about not doing foolish things or changing in the name of love.

It seems to me that the point is quite ironic. By indulging in their mutual passion, the lovers are actually sacrificing themselves to love in the best and only really important way. I agree with you-the song is great!

Sorry about the repost. I made a typo:

it can mean one of two things (a) that the narrator only likes his partner for sex and socializing and THAT'S IT (he won't sacrifice his "freedom" and material property to make a life with a partner or (b) he is telling his partner that he will not change who he is and she should accept him as he is, because he accepts her as she is.

He likes her but he's telling her he's not her Prince and can't give of himself like she is wanting of him.

I think this is a direct reference to Dave, ad how, being Poly, and a free thinker, exclusivity can't be a thing.
