Monument Lyrics

When the site was found
We laid the foundations down
It didn't take long before
They came back tumbling down
Don't build at night
You need a little light
How else are you going to see
What it is going to be like

So we picked up our tools
And we worked in the morning light
With the last stone placed
Wasn't it a wonderful site
But it fell back down
And scattered all around
Anything passes
When you need glasses

My monument
It feel down
My monument
It feel down

Work all of my days for this kind of praise
It fell down
Work all of my days
It fell down

Seems like someone is trying to acomplish something but keeps going about doing it the wrong way. Cool song. The Cover version by Gus Gus is pretty good as well, very different.

Not much, lyrically speaking. I think the plan was to give Dave something to sing about-an archeology project I reckon-over bassline, which is waay exotic sounding, like Middle Eastern or Egyptian. It's really just a nice short interlude of mood music.

I agree with you, pharmageek. I think it's pretty empty, but it has some early Martin Gore metaphores: the monument is an achievement in life. It's a very pessimistic lyric, actually...

Maybe I'm just getting ahead of myself, but this lyric may be a sign of what he would do in the future, most notably his fixation with religion show a bit on "this kind of praise".

Just because we can't be sure what the lyrics are about doesn't mean it's empty :P It is difficult to say what Martin had in mind but for me it's a song about a man trying to achieve something in life but he can't so he tries to overcome it in a different ways.

It's about erectile dysfunction.

Rather unlikely, though not completely out of place. Given lines like 'It fell down' or 'Anything passes when you need glasses'.

It would not be the first time Depeche (M.L. Gore) used a double entendre in their lyrics (another example would be "Sacred" with lines like 'I'm a missionary').
