I really don't see God, nor Jesus Christ at all in this song, but perhaps a Goddess that he is submitting to.

The warm glow that lingers on is a human Goddess. The "burning" is that Martin--the masochist--has already been tortured and is experiencing that burning sensation from being tortured and he is in full submission to his human Goddess...

"I surrender all control" "I surrender heart and soul"

And he's saying that male submission to a Dominant is a "higher love".

A perfect song. A love so great it seems above any other love. Check out this song, you'll be happy you did. The live version is also really good

As with most of the songs on SOFAD, it follows the central theme of the comparison between romantic love and religious love. If you weren't really familiar with DM songs, you could easily say that this song was about finding god or something like that. But, searching beyond the surface of the lyrics, you can see that Martin is comparing romantic love and religious love. He himself said that he sees a connection between sex and religion.

Beautiful song! In my opinion, I feel it has to do with giving up what you have in life for something bigger, better, more powerful, a higher power "I surrender heart and soul, sacrifice to a higher goal" the album itself is called songs of faith and devotion, this song represents pure devotion towards this "higher power" whether it's a being, a god or simply a lifestyle

Depeche Mode's Higher Love ain´t merely a 'pop love song' as we usually understand all pop love songs. Doesn't talk about eros-love (she-him). The song take you to a level in which all symbols are burnt out, or exist just to lead to a thought level. This state of consciousness doesn´t show -as i read- in the name of a personal god or godess. All that keeps in a platonic being-in-the-world. Instead, the song talks about the grounding of Life between the own Work. That's not a Work of the own ego; in fact, the Work needs all the ego-ism to set the ground, it need necesity to be done.
