Sounds like this song is about life not turning out the way everyone thought it would.
Could this song written for Cat Stevens, I think Cat has a song that speak of the same thing, but he was the protagonist in the song, singing for his mama, telling that he didn't grew what his mama wanted him to be...he became a singer instead.
