Looking for the Holes Lyrics

i am looking for the holes
the holes in your jeans
because i want to know
are they worn out in the seat
or are they worn out in the knees

there are so many ways to wear
what we've got before it's gone
to make use of what is there
i don't wear anything i can't wipe my hands on

do your policies fit between the headlines
are they written in newsprint, are they distant
mine are crossing an empty parking lot
they are a woman walking home
at night
alone
they are six string that sing
and wood that hums against my hipbone

we can't afford to do anyone harm
because we owe them our lives
each breath is recycled from someone else's lungs
are enemies are the very air in disguise

you can talk a great philosophy
but if you can't be kind to people
every day
it doesn't mean that much to me
it's the little things you do
the little things you say
it's the love you give along the way

when we patch things up
they say a job well done
but when we ask why
where did the rips come from
they say we are subversive
and extreme, of course
we are just trying to track a problem to its source

because we know we can't sit back
and let people come to harm
we owe them our lives
each breath is recycled from someone else's lungs
our enemies are the very air
our enemies are the air

we are looking for the holes
the holes in your jeans
because we want to know
are they worn out in the seat
or are they worn out in the knees

we need to take advantage of the moment and give eachother liove... because we owe eachother everything whether or not we are "enemies".. "each breath is recycled from someone else's lungs" that line keeps me thinking for hours and i feel blessed to share air with some people i love specifically

It's about how the most important thing is how you treat those around you.

Its all well and good to have these political ideals- but do you practice what you preach?

i absolutely love this song. there is so much hidden meaning, and everytime i listen to it, i find something else new i didn't remember hearing at all. there are so many lines of inspiration, and really it describes i think the way that people and community? is brought up, and maybe ideals and morals., this song makes me think alot, and the lines of "there are so many ways to wear..", its like there are so many opportunities that you can make of your life, and there are so many forks in the road and mistakes and everything! Any decision could change your life forever, and no life is lived the same way.

"i don't wear anything i can't wipe my hands on", how pure and truthful, i love that line, its so ani-ish, and talks about how she doesn't like dressing up fancy really, or being someone she's not, she impresses people by her guitar playing, knowledge, outlooks on life, poetry, political strengths, and so much more,...she doesn't care what her personal appearance is, and doesn't mind to wipe her hands on her own clothes, its un-practical to wear clothes you can't get dirty! i agree with this line, also the like "each breath is recycled from someone elses lungs", i loveeee that line, and totally agree with regardmylashes, and it makes me think and is almost a weird creepy-ish thing to talk about and think about, like we are all connected by the oxygen we breath, and so much more. I cannot end the number of metaphors in this song, i love it!

"do your policies(Politics?) fit between the headlines are they written in newsprint, are they distant mine are crossing an empty parking lot they are a woman walking home at night alone they are six string that sing and wood that hums against my hipbone" I love this lyric (though I think its "politics"not policies?).. its so simple and frank like shes saying.. Im a real person, the way I want to help others is real and sincere.. its about the importance and significance of the everyday struggles/oppressions women face.
