Searching with My Good Eye Closed Lyrics
Painted blue across my eyes
And tied the linen on
And I'm on my way
Looking for the paradigm
So I can pass it off
Is it on my side
Is to the sky
Looking to the sky and down
Searching for a ground
With my good eye closed
If I took you for a ride
Would you take it wrong
Or would you make it right
Looking for a pedestal
That I can put you on
And be on my way
Is it to the sky
Looking to the sky and down
Searching for a ground
With my good eye closed
Stop you're trying to bruise my mind
I can do it on my own
Stop you're trying to kill my time
It's been my death since I was born
I don't remember half the time
If I'm hiding or I'm lost
But I'm on my way
And tied the linen on
And I'm on my way
Looking for the paradigm
So I can pass it off
Is it on my side
Looking to the sky and down
Searching for a ground
With my good eye closed
Would you take it wrong
Or would you make it right
Looking for a pedestal
That I can put you on
And be on my way
Looking to the sky and down
Searching for a ground
With my good eye closed
I can do it on my own
Stop you're trying to kill my time
It's been my death since I was born
I don't remember half the time
If I'm hiding or I'm lost
But I'm on my way

I think this song is about : Looking for meaning in life. Trying to find someone to share it with.
Wheather you find meaning in life or someone to share life with you... You're still on your way to wherever we're all going.
Like most SG songs, the lyrics are so disjointed and vague. The song could mean almost anything. It's a beautiful song - one of SG's best ever.
Its about how man searches for meaning to the world. Its a spiritual song about someone looking for a deity or the 'paradigm', how the world works and the laws that govern it. Unfortunatly people tend be very ignorant and blind when trying to find the truth (religious wars and intolerance) thus the title of the track searching with my good eye closed
My thoughts as well. Though I'm not as generous to religion as you. I think he's damning faith as the object which closes our "good eye" (ie reason). Faith requires us to suspend reason and ground ourselves outside of reason's paradigm and in religion's.

I was born the same year as Chris. I was living in Seattle 90 to 2002. I remember the incredible feeling of that period in time when this song came out. Things seemed interesting again. From my perspective it was about negotiating the rules of the world while refusing to compromise that which is sacred.
Is it to the sky Looking to the sky and down Searching for a ground With my good eye closed
"My good eye closed" in other words my "good eye" is not for sale. It incapsulated the feeling of disgust with the prevailing warped culture we were being asked to embrace.
This song will forever remind me of the grunge movement entirely because you said that.

I believe the song is about how we are taught to perceive and comprehend the world around us apart from our instincts and how those instincts are confused based on social indoctrination. From the most mundane and basic things as children, to that which paints a "comprehensive" understanding concerning human nature's deep seated fear of death. We are taught about those who mythically command the forces beyond our sense of reason. Whereby we are introduced, via what we are taught, to supernatural allies that have the ability to thwart those nasty forces beyond reason at death's door. It seems to be about the inevitability of death and how our ego comforts itself knowing what's coming up at the end of the road. I think death is the destination that Cornell refers to as being "on my way" to.
about being lost in life and looking for real meaning
I agreee. But I would say it describes intense periods of change in the human maturation process. The narrator sees his own mind from the perspective of the other mind set which he is yet to fully grow into. What do YOU think?
One of the better songs on Badmotorfinger. The see n' say at the beginning is funny.
'disjointed and vague' only begin to describe it.
Nonetheless, the best song on BMF, definitely.
isn't 'disjointed and vague' what makes soundgarden's lyrics so great? I love the way Chris Cornell writes songs
dont care what it means, but when this song was performed live later in there career (1994 -1997)...it sounded so sweet...cornell would sing the first verses in a lower pitch with no drumming or bass in the background, just the guitars strumming a bit...and then when he was done with the verse it would play the song fully but heavier and with more feeling...they should have re made this song the way they did it live...fkn awsome...look up the song on youtube and it should be in the movie "hype!" sounds awesome
