Leave In Silence Lyrics
I've told myself so many times before
But this time I think I mean it for sure
We have reached a full stop
Nothing's going to save us from the big drop
Reached our natural conclusion
Outlived the illusion
I hate being in these situations
That call for diplomatic relations
If I only knew the answer
Or I thought we had a chance
Or I could stop this
I would stop this thing
From spreading like a cancer
What can I say
I don't want to play anymore
What can I say
I'm heading for the door
I can't stand this emotional violence
Leave in silence
Leave in silence
We've been running around in circles all year
Doing this and that and getting nowhere
This will be the last time
I think I said that last time
If I only had a potion
Some magical lotion
That could stop this
I would set the wheels in motion
But this time I think I mean it for sure
We have reached a full stop
Nothing's going to save us from the big drop
Outlived the illusion
I hate being in these situations
That call for diplomatic relations
If I only knew the answer
Or I thought we had a chance
Or I could stop this
I would stop this thing
From spreading like a cancer
I don't want to play anymore
What can I say
I'm heading for the door
I can't stand this emotional violence
Leave in silence
Leave in silence
Doing this and that and getting nowhere
This will be the last time
I think I said that last time
Some magical lotion
That could stop this
I would set the wheels in motion

this is about the falkland islands war that occurred in the 1980s. martin has said many times that is the event that inspired this song. he was against the UK govt being there in the first place and then waging a war.
LuvMartinGore: LIKE I SAID, its a breakup song! You're right theres nothing complex about it since its very straightfoward. BTW, Alan Wilder was a HUGE musical and lyrical influence on Construction Time Again.
it seems to be about a relationship and how u just have to let it die peacefully bc its not gonna develop into anything else. the thing is he's known this for a while but still hasnt managed to let go and move on. u get the feeling that even after this self-confession he wouldn't be able to do so. the "we've" is what hinted me towards a relationship but it could be a relationship w. drugs, ED's whatever. This is one of my ultra fav DM songs. For me its an ultimate 80's track-new wave, power pop. Its easily dancable or at least u can continuously bop ur head to it like a young dave (w. a fully buttoned blue flannel shirt usually reserved for compulsory church services) does. I think the video is fantastic w. an experimental art theme.
huh, jmskrzyp??? seems alot more like a shattered relationship that one cant escape from
This is clearly a Breakup song, one of the very best breakup songs ever written. Its so terse and to the point as one would expect from Depeche Mode.BTW I cannot see how this song could possibly have anything to do with the Falkland War-let along anything political.
Doesn't he actually say: "This'll be the last time I think I said the FIRST time"?
He would ironically mean that he never managed to give up that something (drug?)
This one is about the end of a relationship, period. Nothing deep or complicated.Remember, this is an early DM song, off of A Broken Frame. Back then, Martin hadn't really started writing songs with darker meanings such as drugs, etc. He was still trying to keep the more poppy lyrical content that was Vince Clarke's style. Not until their following LP, Construction Time Again, did Martin's songwriting expand to more complex themes.
The meaning is really ambiguous if you take a look at each verse. But damn, this song is so danceable and has an amazing groove.
The song is about the internal crisis over Vince's departure. "What can I say, I don't wanna play [keyboards] anymore"
