Stability Lyrics
Time for the final bout
Rows of deserted houses
All our stable mates are highway bound
Give us our measly sum
Getting the air inside my lungs is heavenly
We're starting out with nothing but crippling doubt
We'll rest easy (justified)
I've suffered a swift defeat
I'll endure countless repeats
The gift of memory is an awful curse
With age it just gets much worse
But I won't mind
Rows of deserted houses
All our stable mates are highway bound
Give us our measly sum
Getting the air inside my lungs is heavenly
We're starting out with nothing but crippling doubt
We'll rest easy (justified)
I've suffered a swift defeat
I'll endure countless repeats
The gift of memory is an awful curse
With age it just gets much worse
But I won't mind

I think it is a very clever irony. I think the person comes to grips with the fact that his own mind will curse and judge him more than any other which is why he calls it a curse and why he will endure countless repeates. I think the point of the irony is somewhat literal however that even though there is instability in the mind, there is a collective stability among friends (due to the near breakup of the band)
beautiful song, just beautiful. aural bliss whenever i listen it. i think ol' ben gibbard is singing about moving on, maybe from after a break up, or just growing up and letting go of things that were a part of you. the song is so pretty i can't even fall asleep to it, i can't help but stay awake and listen
It's an awesome song undoubetdlly, easily the best on the EP. I think it's more of a song about taking stock of your life and realizing how little you've accomplished. to me it represents defeat, but i could be reading into it because i started listening to it after a bad year.
wonderful
don't we all crave a little stability? Indeed.

stupid tan kid.... maybe defeat but moving on from that defeat? I dunno. Nonetheless...not a wasted second even though the song is long.
The wording is so amazingly chosen here; it sounds almost... I don't know, medieval, with the phrases like "stable mates," "measly sum," "suffered a swift defeat," etc.
"the gift of memory's an awful curse, with age it just gets much worse" : best deathcab line ever.
what is a sketch system?
this is my song mother fuckers
