I put on my overcoat and walked into winter, my teeth chattered rhythms
And they were grouped in twos or threes,
Like a Morse code message was sent from me to me.
Cars on slippery slopes, they're stuck: people pushing through
Their mittens as I was beginning to feel it soaking through my shoes,
Getting colder with every step I took to your apartment, dear.

And I was a kaleidoscope, the snow on my lenses distorting the image of what
Was only one of you and I didn't know which one to address as all your lips
Moved.

This is when I forget breathe all the things I scripted, they sound unfounded.
And the look that you're giving me, it tells me exactly what you are thinking,
"this ain't working anymore."

They got their mothers worked into a panic
Sledding down hills into oncoming traffic
The parents layered clothes until the children couldn't move then kept them
Outside til their noises were blue and I got left there, too.

I put on my overcoat and walked into winter, my teeth chattered rhythms.
And they were grouped in twos or threes like a Morse code message was sent from me
To me.

this song is all describing a meeting with gibbard's girlfriend that he expects will be bad and happens to be bad.

i think the first line is just describing scenery, its the winter blah blah. and then i think the "2s or 3s" is hes seeing people in pairs and in threes like a boyfriend and girlfriend and maybe another parter :). all the way up to "feeling it soaking through my shoes" is just showing that its a melancholy day. Then it goes to "feeling it soaking through my shoes" which shows that he knows something bad is coming and hes feeling the sadness all around him in the cold winter day.

the "i was a kaleidoscope" line describes the irony of the situation because his glasses have impaired his vision and he can still tell what shes saying. "this is when i forget breathe all the things i scripted, they sound unfounded" is describing now that shes saying she wants to go her seperate way hes starting to freak out and lose grip a little.

the next line ("this aint working anymore") is pretty straight foward. (note: i thought it was this aint working out too but the anymore drops off at the end of the verse and he kind of hints the "more"part of it).

the next few lines confuse me. I think its just showing that hes watching all the families play and he feels so alone like the children whose noses are blue. the final lines just wrap up the song and repeat verses.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
