We're in This Together Lyrics
Holding on to when... when everything seemed to matter more
The two of us
(All used) All used and beaten up
Watching fate, as it flows, down the path, we have chose
We're in this together now
None of them can stop us now
We will make it through somehow
You and me
If the world should break in two
Until the very end of me
Until the very end of you
They pick and they pull, trying to get their fingers in
Well they've got to kill what we've found
Well they've got to hate what we fear
Well they've got to make it go away
Well they've got to make it disappear
As lost as I get, I will find you
The deeper the wound, I'm inside you
We're in this together now
None of them can stop us now
We will make it through somehow
You and me
If the world should break in two
Until the very end of me
Until the very end of you
All that we were is gone, we have to hold on
All that we were is gone, we have to hold on
When all our hope is gone, we have to hold on
All that we were is gone, but we can hold on
We're in this together now
None of them can stop us now
We will make it through somehow
You and me
Even after everything
You're the queen and I'm the king
Nothing else means anything
To me, this song portrays a relationship that has undergone the many hardships of jealousy and envy as well as others' faithlessness in something that was obvioulsy strong enough to transcend over these complications. The part I admire the most is:
"awake to the sound as they peel apart the skin they pick and they pull trying to get their fingers in
well they've got to kill what we found well they've got to hate what they fear well they've got to make it go away well they've got to make it disappear
the farther i fall i'm beside you as lost as i get i will find you the deeper the wound i'm inside you for ever and ever i am a part of..."
This is because he describes how he feel s about thir relationship without explaining it clearly. In my mind, that takes much talent.
Trent Reznor has repeatedly stated that this is NOT a positive song in any way. It's actually about heroin addiction, which is why some of the comments here are so funny.
"It's about me and my boyfriend! It describes our relationship exactly!" - Yeah, that's healthy!
Part of what makes this song so tragic is the passion involved in it. It's easy to see how some people would mistake that passion for the kind that is involved in a [lover's] relationship, I mean the song is a love song after all. But like Depeche Mode's 'Sweetest Perfection' and 'Never Let Me Down Again' it's a love song about his relationship with a drug, not with another person. The lyrics: "well they've got to kill what we found well they've got to hate what they fear well they've got to make it go away well they've got to make it disappear" indicate that...

Also, to the people who think this is directed towards his Grandmother: if that's the case, it puts a rather incestuous connotation on the lyrics doesn't it? The lyrics aren't about affectionate love, they're about romantic love hence the whole "king and queen" reference.
I have heard Trent say himself, he has never done heroin. If that's what you were implying.

To me though the song seems to be about hope, and that this pain we experience (the agony of being alone or in a difficult relationship) will all soon go away.

OR maybe it could personally mean something to the LISTENER as well.

I agree with the whole relationship thing... but to me, it sounds like total abandonment at the end. A failed relationship... and not just love, any kind of relationship...
i always thought this song was about making yourself content. i mean the video potrayed a hundred trent reznors so i came to the conclusion that it was about making yourself happy and that in the end yourself is what you have, no matter all the inflictions you face.
I think you've nailed it imo. I don't think its as simple as being about a relationship, I imagine it was written about him becoming more comfortable with himself (since at the time, he was supposedly suffering from social anxiety disorder.)

i heard in an interview trent said he never wanted people to approch him and think it was a love song because it can be seen in that way but he wrote it to be something deeper. and went on to say about what u described finding content within ones self because in reality your the only one who is gonna be with you till the end.

You guys are all very close. It's a love song and a statement of commitment to his grandmother, Clara. As i stated in my comments on TDTWWA, The Frail, and The Wretched, this song is about his grandmother's illness and death. This song is about the point of strength where Trent felt that he and his grandmother could overcome her illness by faith, hope, and love. The song just oozes the power and strength that comes from love. The progression from the power of this song into the superhuman "i won't let you fall apart" in track 6, The Fragile, seems very natural. On to The Fragile...
this song reminds me of a relationship. they've grown apart and need to let go but he doesnt want to, he wants to past to be teh present: all that we were is gone we have to hold all that we were is gone we have to hold when all our hope is gone we have to hold all that we were is gone but we can hold on
it's beautiful
Kurt Loder of MTV once asked Trent if the "The Fragile" and "We're In This Together" tracks were love songs. His responce?
"There was a tragedy involved in all of them. I just read some early reviews that We're In This Together was unusually positive and I didn't write it thinking it was very positive. So I made a video that is very, very ugly to make sure no one gets the wrong idea."
Trent said in an interview, which I can't find right now, that it isn't a love song, it's him clinging to someone, not letting them go.
Yeah, I personally find it baffling that so many people think this is a love song. To me, it's a love song in the same sense The Police's 'Every breath you take' is: AKA it's not. It's a fucked up codependent relationship. It's them destroying themselves and everything around them, all of it because The Relationship is all that matters.

This song, to me, is about when you're in a relationship that everybody is trying to destroy. Everybody is trying to get their hands on it and fuck up what you have. I love this song.
