"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I was living in a hotel in Marylebone High Street and had just been kicked out of my flat in Chiswick, for being drunk and disorderly. Anyway, I went over to Meg´s. I wasn´t seeing her, she was just a mate and, this may sound really corny but I had the music and melody for the song in my head but I didn´t have any words. While I was around there we were listening to a Pixies album called, I think it´s... Supernova. As we were listening to this album, we were watching a documentary about where they make Champagne in France. You may laugh but it´s true. I was there drunk going,

Some of the lyrics were written when I was out of it. But some of the words are about nothing. One is about Bracket The Butler who used to be on Camberwick Green, or Chipley or Trumpton or something. He used to take about 20 minutes to go down the hall. And then I couldn´t think of anything that rhymed with hall apart from cannonball, so I wrote,
