Deftones themselves actually hate this song. They only made it because their record label wanted them to release an extra single that was "heavier" and dealt with the teen angst that's popular on MTV.
From an interview with Chino:
"Back To School was a mistake. A calculated song, that had been built up with only one aim in mind: It should be a single."
"Back to School was released because I was an idiot. I wanted to prove something (to the record company). Months later, after White Pony was released, they wanted us to do a new version of Pink Maggit. They said we lost our heaviness, and there were no more singles on the album. First, I wanted to stick this idea up my ass, but then I thought: "I'm gonna show those fuckers how easy it is to create a hit-single". And so I rapped a hip hop part on that song, we shortened it and half an hour later, the hit-single was ready to roll on."
this song is about how you can choose whether or not to succed in life and school, and in the end chino, having assumedly passed is on the next page, possibly becuase he got famous and is in the paper

This song is about Chino's hatred for high school and the people it came with. I believe there is a girl that he realized he does not need being inferred about in this song. Overall, this song was rushed and Chino didn't even want it on this album.
i think this song is about school and how its so boring and tideous and its about the whole teenager rebellion thing. it sounds a lot like me at my school, roamin the halls and shit. if it was really about other bands Nothingface555 than why is the video about chino at a highschool and all the kids run out to see a deftones concert?
It just pretty much reminds me of highschool (just graduated), just think back to what high school was like for you.....if you look back at all the "cliques" you hung out with and all the really stupid things you did all those years "wouldn't it make you sick" too. I think its also just saying don't put on a front for anyone. "You just can't go wrong rocking the clothes, coppin the stance" I think in a sarcastic way its saying, just quit trying to be like "them" cause your not!
this song kicks ass! it totally is talking about the fakiness seen in every highschool and how everyone just tries to fit into the so called "norm". and i think chino is trying to say we don't hafta be posers; be who you feel you are, and be who you want to be, dont try to be lame and be what others want you to be. stay true to yourself....this song rocks!!!!!
Nothingface-about how other bands think thyere in the sAme catEGory as deftones-my friend and i think defotnes music is so original and so many bands try to rip them off that deftones will be a new category of music and kids will someday running around saying "i'm a deftone!" instead of "i'm a punk!" stupid caffeine induced idea, but thats what i thought of. whatever
FOr those of you who like the deftones i think you might like GLassjaw, they're an emocore punk band, that are similar to Deftones but have more emphasis on punk then the Deftones have to make them different from the deftones. I think you guys should check'em out especially if you guys are into the nyc progressive hardcore punk thing.
This song kicks too much ass. "Look back I sift through all the cliques, roamin' the halls all year, making me sick" Those lines say it all. Because I am at the point in school where ALL the cliques piss me off. This song has a deep meaning to me: let me break it down for you with certain lines:
"You can't just go round rockin the clothes, copyin the stance cuz really its everything that you're NOT" Great line for those stupid wiggers in my school. (wigger=white guy who acts black) "So why don't you run back to school" Dude, in about 10 years those jerks who are so popular now will have no lives and will have a job at McDonald's at best, and will always reminisce on the days when they were on the "top", and I'll have "closed the book up". "You think we're on the same page, but oh, WE'RE NOT" All those stupid wiggers who think I'm one of them. I have no remote idea why they would think so, I openly hate rap.
