This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

mrbun, I agree with you. I think this song does have a certain humor and satire about it. But at the same time, I think there is a bigger, more empathetic message behind the humor.
Tori Amos's version of the cover, while much more subdued and brooding, seems to completely wipe the humor away from the song and gets that buried message across much more openly.
I mean, it is sort of funny in a morbid way; but it's also disturbing. Yet, the protagonist in the song is obviously just a girl who couldn't deal with the pressure of life anymore. We all feel like that sometimes. Not many of us do like Mondays.
I like both the original and the Tori cover; they both have their pros and cons.
