I think she wrote this song about the public witch hunt that she went through in the early '90s. I mean, she's always been the subject of a witch hunt her entire career. The whole Vanity Fair thing, and then everything that happened with people's reactions to Kurt and her being blamed (and in some cases outright accused of murder)– and really everything that people perceive of her and hate her for, all for simply being herself. She gets a lot of flack and she always has. The "off with her head" verses make it obvious to me, and the line, "It's the awful truth, you'd fight for your life" is kind of like her saying, "Hey, if you were in my position, you'd be just as mean right back". The last line of the song echoes the same sentiments– when they come for you, just say that you don't care. In all truth, people have been horribly, disgustingly mean to her; fans, the public, the media, and ESPECIALLY that entire group of the public who believe she murdered Kurt. She's always had to prove herself and people are extremely polarized on her, and I think that's what this song is about– her having to respond to all of that.

i think its about the aching of love and how she tried to help kurt with his drug problems and stuff. saying how the ache of love and longing gets to your roots, and that you can feel it so much it ''mite as well hurt'' etc i can think of more but cant put it into words and cant b arsed to think ne more
"Use once and destroy" is printed on almost every hypodermic needle. Considering her love for intravenous drug use, I think Courtney didn't have to look too far to get this song title.

the phrase 'use once and distroy' was hardly invented by Cobain, since it's been a well known phrase for years.
I'm pretty sure this song is about drugs. And possibly about being in a relationship with an addict and having to constantly be the person to help them out of it.
I never forgot what Yoko Ono said about Courtney's music- its raw, powerful and anguish laden that women relate to. IMO, men can too but it was about female artists so she plugged in her feminine hood to her music.

Now the historian in me is tempted to see in this a Tudor reference . Mary Queen of Scots, as a young widow wore the colour of mourning for queens : white. She was accused of murdering her husband Lord Darnley and was finally executed by decapitation ("off with her head"). On the day of her execution, she wore red, the colour of martyrdom. Courtney seems to have an interest in the Tudors judging by the use of Anne Boleyn pictures in some of her album's art and she seems to have been inspired by the archetype of the decapitated queen. But again I may be reading too much into this !

This song sounds like old school Hole. The theme of this song is most likely drugs, but it could also be about being used in a relationship. Of course, it has some references to Kurt Cobain for those that seek them. The themes of addiction, love, and drug use are very Kurt Cobain, but they are also very Courtney Love. This is a song typical of Courtney's life. It just sounds like her. The Lyrics of this song are so gorgeous.I love singing along with the song, just because I love the lyrics. Only Courtney could come up with a song that ombines the themes of drug use and being used with that of love. Nice Nice song!
