Who Will Save Your Soul Lyrics

People living their lives for you on T.V.
They say they're better than you and you agree
He says "Hold my calls from behind those cold brick walls"
Says "Come here boy, there ain't nothing for free"
Another doctor's bill, a lawyer's bill
Another cute cheap thrill
You know you love him if you put in your will but

Who will save your souls when it comes to the powers now
Huh huh who will save your souls after those lies that you told, boy
And who will save your souls if you won't save your own?

We try to hustle them, try to bustle them, try to cuss them
The cops want someone to bust down on Orleans Avenue
Another day, another dollar, another war, another tower
Went up where the homeless had their homes
So we pray to as many different Gods as there are flowers
But we call religion our friend
We're so worried about saving our souls
Afraid that God will take his toll
That we forget to begin but

Who will save your soul when it comes to the betters now?
Huh huh who will save your souls after those lies that you told, boy
And who will save your souls if you won't save your own?

Some walking, some are talking, some are stalking their kill
Got social security, but it doesn't pay your bills
There are addictions to feed and there are mouths to pay
So we bargain with the devil, that you're ok for today say
That you love them take that money and run
Say it's been swell, sweetheart, but it was just one of those things
Those flings, those strings you've got to cut
So get out on the streets, girls, and bust your butts

Who will save your soul when it comes to the flowers now
Huh huh who will save your soul after all the lies that you told, boy
And who will save your soul if you won't save your own?

This is a wide ranged song that talks about lots of issues. Americas economy: "Got social security, but that it doesn't pay your bills" "Another day, another dollar, another war, another tower. Went up to where the homeless had their homes" The media: "People living their lives for you on TV. They say they're better than you and you agree." The wrongful security people search for in religion: "But we call religion our friend. We're so worried about saving our souls. Afraid that God will take his toll. That we forget to begin"

Honestly, I play acoustic guitar and sing and this is my favorite song to play. It has meaning. It talks about more then just a small break up or a high school crush. Its more then just a philosiphy on life and its more then just a rappers discussion of sex money or drugs. Its real.

I think what shes trying to say is dont search for something your not willing to creat. Why want religion if its only for the security of your soul? Why look for world peace if your the one waging war?

Jewel is an insipiration and a genious :]

Jewel's only good song, but damn is it a good one. This is on Wikipedia: "When I was about sixteen years old I took a train from Michigan to San Diego and then into Tijuana and hitchhiked around Mexico. It seemed like everybody else was looking for somebody to save them. I wrote it during that trip, but I had no idea it would ever be on a record."

I have sheet music to this song, so I decided to download it. The lyrics are pretty cool and when she says "people living their lives for you on TV, they say they're better than you and you agree" I think she's saying how people on tv are always a certain way and considered "beautiful" and you have to be like them, the media enforces a certain way to look. And you actually start to believe they're better than you.

you dont hae to be like anyone no one forces you to do anything dickhead

Damn 1adrenilan.....Harsh much?

best line in the entire song:

"people living their lives for you on TV, they say they're better than you and you agree"

In my opinion Jewel is one of the greatest poets of this century not to mention one of the greatest song writers, she's up there with Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan. This is all my opinion. This song hurts the people that it mostly applies to, not saying it doesn't apply to everyone but the people who choose to lie to themselves by saying their lives are healthy.

"Another day, another dollar, another war, another tower Went up to where the homeless had their homes "

best line in the whole song. the american lifestyle encapsulated in two lines.

anyway the first verse is about money and it's effects on people as well as the media. a large part of america.

the second verse is about corporations and how they say that they are helping others but really only serving their own ends.

the third verse is about the people saying that the system doesn't work even though the first two verse must be correct.

I'd explain my viewpoint line for line but I'm tired.

I love Jewel. This song just captures society at large so perfectly. And the best line, to me, would be: "There are addictions to feed and there are mouths to pay". When I hear it, I think of parents who spend their money on their drug addictions instead of feeding their kids, and big mouth executives/politicians/what have you that don't worry enough about people and instead worry about paying off the "important" people.

This song accurately describes the rise of American fascism; a rich upper class makes its millions off new wars, new 'towers where the homeless had their homes,' and live their lives in a parasitic, paranoid decadence.

"He says, "Hold my calls" from behind walls cold. The Boss says, "Come here boy. There ain't nothin' for free."

--Rich corporate CEO's force young men to give them sexual favors in exchange for advancement behind cold office walls.

Who cares if she gets high, doesn't get high, sometimes gets high, or whatever. She is an amazing songwriter, poet, musician. So let it be, and let her do what she wants, she's capable of making her own decisions. It wouldn't make her a worse person either way.

I liked this song okay when it first came out. shortly after I grew to F'in HATE it. not Jewel's fault thought. I worked at a Cinemark movie theater in 96. y'know how they would play music in the auditoriums when the movie wasn't showing? well for a month they played only "Cinemark's Featured Artists". a month of nothing but Jewel and Hootie and the Blowfish. basically their two big albums of that time. man, I wanted to quit after a couple of weeks. their music was what I had to sweep up theaters to
