Today is gonna be the day
That they're gonna throw it back to you
By now you shoulda somehow
Realized what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now

Backbeat, the word was on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don't know how

'Cause maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you're my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day
But they'll never throw it back to you
By now you shoulda somehow
Realized what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now

And all the roads that lead you there were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don't know how

I said maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you're my wonderwall

I said maybe (I said maybe)
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you're my wonderwall

I said maybe (I said maybe)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (that saves me)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (that saves me)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (that saves me)

    Song Meaning

The word "wonderwall" means "the person you constantly find yourself thinking about". This song is simply about the feelings human beings get when they experience the initial stages of love and infatuation (limerence). It describes the volleying between euphoria and agony that a crush can make you feel.

In other words, the song "Wonderwall" is basically about the butterflies you get in your stomach when your crush walks into the room and the thoughts that stem from those feelings.

"Today is gonna be the day That they're gonna throw it back to you"

He's saying today is your opportunity to express your love. You're going to be in the presence of your secret crush, and you better make your move.

"By now you should've somehow Realized what you gotta do"

He's saying that it's obvious you need to approach your crush and tell them how you feel. There's no other way. Silence leads to nothing. This, of course, is much easier said than done, due to fear of rejection.

"I don't believe that anybody Feels the way I do, about you now"

He's saying that nobody else in the world could possibly have stronger feelings toward this person at this exact moment in time. His crush is the only thing that's on his mind. From the moment he wakes up until he goes to sleep. He's infatuated with his crush.

"Back beat, the word was on the street That the fire in your heart is out"

His crush has been hurt so badly by relationships in the past, that he fears cynicism will ruin his odds at casting the spell that will capture his crush's heart.

"I'm sure you've heard it all before But you never really had a doubt"

He's certain his crush has been through it all in the past. She's entered relationships without second guessing and has been hurt because of it. He's afraid that this will scare her away from him.

"I don't believe that anybody Feels the way I do about you now"

He's saying that nobody else in the world could possibly have stronger feelings toward this person at this exact moment in time. His crush is the only thing that's on his mind. From the moment he wakes up until he goes to sleep. He's infatuated with his crush.

"And all the roads we have to walk are winding And all the lights that lead us there are blinding"

Relationships are so complicated and hard to obtain and maintain

"There are many things that I Would like to say to you but I don't know how"

He means exactly what is stated. He has so many things to say to his crush but is afraid to open his mouth and express his feelings because he fears rejection.

"Because maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me And after all, you're my wonderwall"

It is possible that getting into a relationship with his crush will cure his loneliness and sadness and make him truly happy.

"Today was gonna be the day But they'll never throw it back to you"

In retrospect, he missed his opportunity to express his love. He remained silent and the opportunity to show his love is now gone. It's too late.

"By now you should've somehow Realized what you're not to do'

In retrospect, he realizes remaining silent and holding his feelings inside was the wrong thing to do, because now he is left wondering what could have been and it kills him inside.

"I don't believe that anybody Feels the way I do, about you now"

Still, he does not believe it is possible for anyone else on the planet to love her as much as he does, even though he was to scared of rejection to express his feelings.

"And all the roads that lead you there are winding And all the lights that light the way are blinding"

Relationships are so complicated and hard to obtain and maintain.

"There are many things that I Would like to say to you but I don't know how"

He means exactly what is stated. He has so many things to say to his crush but is afraid to open his mouth because he fears rejection.

"I said maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me And after all, you're my wonderwall"

It is still possible that getting into a relationship with his crush will cure his loneliness and sadness and make him truly happy.

"I said maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me And after all, you're my wonderwall"

It is still possible that getting into a relationship with his crush will cure his loneliness and sadness and make him truly happy.

"I said maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me You're gonna be the one that saves me You're gonna be the one that saves me"

He's now simply holding on to the fantasy that him and his crush will one day be together.

So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness". The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns) There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
