Sleeping Sun was launched on 11th of August 1999, the same day with the solar eclipse which occured in part of Europe and Asia that year.
The videoclip itself figures Tarja singing while some scenes show a solar eclipse.
Now if you take the exact verses which contain "222" you have: 222 days of light will be desired by the night.
coincidence or not, there are exactly 222 days starting 1st of January till August 10th inclusive. - valid for non-leap years.

A beautiful way to leave the earth for a few minutes...a true song for all the escapists and wayfarers out there.
While the generally known song meaning is that it was written for the eclipse, complete with the math lining up in the song even, Tuomas is legendary for having deeper meanings in his lyrics. The original version with Tarja was a beautiful journey from this reality, but it wasn't until I heard the live version with Floor at Tampere that a deeper meaning revealed itself (for me at least).

As a statement between lovers, I interpret this as "Even if we only ever have a single night together in each other's company, that makes the rest of this lifetime worth it." "Sleeping, weeping, with you" - both tears of joy being together, and sorrow knowing it will end, be it a literal single night or a metaphorical one (we aren't on this planet long - similar to the message of "While Your Lips Are Still Red) - dare I say it is his version of "It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." Even if "lost" in this context isn't even a failed love, but lost to the progression of time.
And regardless of how deep you dig, the version at Tampere in my opinion is what you end up with if you distilled beauty and awe and gave it music and lyrics. Absolutely mesmerizing.

it's without a doubt, Nightwish's most emotional song, it's so beautiful, all your emotions, be they good or bad just come out when you listen to it...
After listening to Slipknot, static x. KSE mudvayne CHimaira and I'm officially rocked .. any step further I would lose my sanity ... the song brings me back to my senses straight awaY... NW ROCKS//// Anyone noticed how eatheral Tarja is ... kinda freaky when you stare into her eyes.. has that freaky supernatural tone attached to it ... shivers..... ( even if its on one of NW's vids)
This song makes me feel like im floating. like im beaneath the same moon. it also makes me incredibly lonely for not having a signifcant other...
i listen to this song, close my eyes and dream. It's simply beautifull, the voice, the music, just perfect like lot of nightwish's songs!
