General CommentTake A Picture seems to be about being on a natural high (hence high on an airplane), but fearing that you won't remember what it feels like and it will eventually end. For a while you seem to know the answers to life's problems, but you know that the feeling won't last.

"Actually, my favorite song is "Take A Picture." It brings up the happiest time in my life, I think. One time when I was just running around a plane naked. Ha! I had a lot of fun on that plane trip."

"Yeah, it was about absolute, fucking unbelievable rock stardom, and I don't remember one second about it. All I remember was waking up with my pants around my ankles, and a nervous yuppie sitting next to me in first class literally panicking. Whoever was with me pulled my wallet out of my pants and took out $800. He gave it to the flight attendant and he said, "Look, he's a rock star. Please don't have him arrested."

Song MeaningThis seems to be a song from the perspective of a drug addict, probably heroin.

"Said no way But knew id try someday" referring to a hardcore drug.

"It still wont wash away And i cant take you with me" heroin addicts are often addicts for life and ignore their friends/family

"I got a seive inside me" A sieve is the filter thing used in syringes

"A pit inside me I got a nowhere point of view" heroin addicts often have no motivation or ambition, content to be "nowhere"

"It makes me wanna take another piece" Pretty self-explanatory.

My InterpretationI think that for any given song, there is at least one person who interprets it as being about drug addiction. "Love Will Keep Us Together", "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "My Heart Will Go On" ... they're all *really* about addiction, people!

But seriously: I think this song is about more than drugs; I think it's about (for want of a better word) "sin". It's about *any* temptation that a person may give in to:

"Said no way
But knew I'd try some day"

And the guilt

"Sad but true
It still won't wash away"

and depression

"I got a sieve inside me
A pit inside me
I got a nowhere point of view"

and self-destruction

"My ambition fell and hit the ground"

and self-loathing

"Take another piece
Take it out on me"

that results from being weak. Drug addiction certainly fits in there, but so does cheating on one's spouse, betraying a friend, gambling away the money in your kid's college fund. Even murder: I suspect that an unfortunate number of people out there have said "I may do some pretty bad stuff, but I'll never kill another person" and then one day ... oops.

Also, I have to comment on the music behind these lyrics: I cannot offhand think of another song by anyone that has this kind of in-your-face animal rawness. This song is coming from a person who has fucked up so badly that they've lost their soul.

All IMHO, of course!
