To Have And To Hold Lyrics
I need to be cleansed
It's time to make amends
For all of the fun
The damage is done
And I feel diseased
I'm down on my knees
And I need forgiveness
Someone to bear witness
To the goodness within
Beneath the sin
Although I may flirt
With all kinds of dirt
To the point of disease
Now I want release
From all this decay
Take it away
And somewhere
There's someone who cares
With a heart of gold
To have and to hold

This song is so beautiful. Though its very melancholic, it has a touching spin of optimism towards the end, which I really like.
Yes, there's definitely a lot of heavy religious imagery in the lyrics, which was obviously intentional, but I think it works very powerfully on a romantic, non-spiritual level as well.
Deftones covered this song on the For the Masses tribute.
There is a theme on this album of filth and sin and the basest parts of human behaviour. This song seems to be a longing for someone who can make him cleaner, more removed from that; someone better than him. Almost like he realizes that he has no moral compass (or at least a seriously flawed one) and wants someone to fulfill that role for him.
I believe this song is about a person who feels diseased for what he can do. Dave says 'Although I may flirt with all kinds of dirt'. So he wants to relieve himself of this burden. When finally Dave tells about 'Someone who cares, with a heart of gold, to have and to hold' I think he's refering to another person, maybe a friend, or even a firm lover, who listen to him to his problems and takes the disease over him. He/She's someone who cares to have (which means to listen to him) and to hold (which I think means to be able to hold off the pain from him and throw suffering away).
I've spent a lot of time looking for the meaning of this song, because I saw a difference between 'have' and 'hold', but it wasn't enough. As always, when I stopped looking for, I've found it.
He feels guilty for being a slut and cheating on his partner."To have and to hold" is a traditional wedding vow. He really wants to settle down and find the right person.
obviously about me I am clearly the only one who cares
Although I may flirt with all kind of dirt... I believe that he indicates that he wants to get away from Satanism.... he wants to be a person of truth...IM DOWN ON MY KNEES... he is asking God forgiveness
This is a simple confession of a sinner asking God to take away the burden of sins. The one who cares is Jesus.
@unnamed76 yeah I doubt Martin Gore had asking Jesus for forgiveness when he wrote when he wrote such an erotic proclamation of lust and love but hey that's just my opinion, take it or leave it.

It's clearly about repenting ones' sins to Jesus Christ.
