Devil's Island Lyrics
Is blocked out by the key,
That locks the door to this hell,
The place they wanted me.
Time's racing like the wind,
Execution's near,
Oh lord, I wait for death,
And, yes, I have no fear.
I recall that night, my every breath,
And, step along the way.
Closed my eyes, walking,
As danger paved the way.
The devil, and the darkness
Let her evil wander free
And, here on Devils Island,
The final stop for me.
Devils Island, Devils Island.
The sea is full of sharks.
The tide takes you away, and
Smashes you on the rocks.
The sun is shining,
But feel not today,
It's warmth, it's dying,
And fading away.
Devils Island, Devils Island.
From the grave beyond.
Oh, so pernicious,
Her soul it creates song.
As there is no man, that is
Here upon the earth,
Able to terminate our
Noisome will since birth.
Is walking next to me,
To the stake, my last request,
To have her burn with me.
But, so it did, the heavens opened,
Rain began to fall.
The final judgement came, and
Was spread before you all.
Final judgement.
But the lesson taught to me,
To stay away from evil,
She doesn't care for me.
She haunts me in my sleep,
Though I tore that page away.
And, here on Devils Island,
I'll always have to stay.
Devils Island, Devils Island
Here I am.
Devils Island, Devils Island
this song is a man reflecting on life before his execution, Devil's Island was an early French prison, much like Alcatraz, escape was thought to be impossible due to the sharks and rough currents in the water
Dave Mustaine said in the live megadeth dvd "Rude Awakening" that this song is about a movie called "Papillon" he says it right before he plays the song.
Yes, this song is directly influenced by the movie 'Papillon' (Butterfly in French), starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. In turn, 'Papillon' is the autobiography of Henri Charriere, one of the only people to successfully escape from Devil's Island.

Not that I expect many people to care, just some insight into the source material by just another film student :)

I think it's pronounced pa-pill-iyon :P

This song expresses the thoughts of a prisoner on Devil's Island about to be executed. In the song, the prisoner's life is spared by God right before he is about to be killed, but he is condemned to spend the rest of his life on Devil's Island.
This song is great to headbang to.
one of the standouts in Peace Sells...
This song is about a murderer, whose victim haunts him. He desires death to end the torment, but he's sentenced to leave on Devil's Island for life.
While I was listening to is..there was two movies that came into my mind
Escape From Absolom and Escape From Alcatraz
I guess..I really like escaping..lol
one of the best songs on Peace Sells along with Wake Up Dead
I always felt this song was inspired by Papillon, but wasn't sure until I read the comment about the dvd statement. I've read the book a couple of times and seen most of the movie, which is very long. The story though, is different

Old, weak, and feeble, But the lesson taught to me, To stay away from evil, She doesn't care for me. She haunts me in my sleep, Though I tore that page away. And, here on Devils Island, I'll always have to stay.
